My daughters wanted to know what I wanted for my birthday a couple of years ago and I said "how about a keyboard for my iPad." Well, I've only used it a couple of times. It might be useful if you do word processing or similar, but otherwise it kind of defeats the purpose. Just my opinion.

My biggest complaint about the iPad is that it better works as a consumer rather than a producer. It's far easier to consume entertainment with the machine than it is to produce content. For most users this is not a bad thing and I use it in consumer mode a lot. But trying to produce content with the onscreen keyboard is an exercise in futility and frustration. Hence, my request about what keyboards others may use.
Don't waste your money! It's much easier to just use the built-in keyboard! I know several who bought a keyboard, one was built into the case and both regretted buying a keyboard!

Not sure how fast you can type, but I can do about 75 words per minute on a real keyboard and probably less than 10 a minute on the on screen thing. Why did the people regret buying a keyboard? Were they touch typists or hunt 'n peck? I can see where a hunt and peck typist would do as well (poorly, actually) with the screen, but using the screen is agonizingly slow for a touch typist.

Well, if you're looking to get a full size keyboard, that's one thing. You could use a blue tooth keyboard with the IPad. The smaller, more compact keyboards that are sold as assessories to the IPad are awkward and as hard to get used to as the IPad keyboard. My friends were both 'regular' keyboard whizzes in speed. I have small hands so it didn't take me too long to get used to the IPad keyboard.

Thanks, mgstrawn. That's a helpful answer. I had one of the small keyboards in a carputer I built and installed a few years ago and didn't care for it. A full-sized keyboard would be the only option worth considering.
