Between the Rains

I almost titled this "After the Rains", but it ain't over yet. It started raining here early yesterday morning and rained all day. Last night about 10:00 I dumped the rain gauge which was overflowing at 6" and we have had 2 1/2" since. Thunder is all around and the forecast is for rain all day today and tomorrow - so I'm happy for this little break of sunshine. My yard is a swamp. Please don't think I'm complaining - I am just astounded that there is any rain left to fall. This is literally a DROP in the BUCKET compared to so very many places in the path of Harvey. It's unbelievable that the skies can hold so very much water. And Harvey has hundreds of miles yet to travel, dropping torrents of rain all the way.

Gerbera - hasn't bloomed much this year due to all the rain; and it's getting another waterlogging now as the rains are back in force!

"Orange Torch Ginger" Curcuma - I moved it under the eaves of the house so it doesn't get beaten up too badly by the rains; I had wondered why it was "Orange Torch" since the blooms were so pink; now I see that the blooms become orange as they age.

Your flowers are even beautiful waterlogged, Sherry, and your ginger is a showstopper. My hidden gingers didn't bloom this year for some reason. You're so right about the rains. It's one storm after another and no relief in sight for the near future, but it's nothing compared to what our neighbors west of us are having to deal with. So heartbreaking, and it makes one stop and think about what is really important....

It hasn't rained here in the last 4 hours or so. Oops. Hope I didn't jinx it!
Katrina (of course) was the worst I've ever been through. It hit one day; the next day damage was surveyed and we allowed ourselves a day of denial; and the following day we dove in and started putting things back to rights. The victims of Harvey won't even be able to do the survey for many days yet to come. So many lives have just been totally upended. Such stress!

Thank you for your kind comment! I had never seen these curcuma ginger plants before and am so hoping I can keep them alive. The pink/orange is actually a spathe (in some research, they have called it a petal) and each one envelopes a bloom. I am quite anxious to see it when all those little yellow buds are opened. I don't even know whether or not I can expect a majority of them to be open at the same time, but I hope so - that would be quite a sight!

While I watch the weather situation in the Texas areas I am saddened with the misery this massive storm has brought to so many! It becomes so real when an occurrence like this finds your part of the world. As it moves away, areas such as yours that are in the storms retreat path are forced to sample some of it's fury. We will pray for all of you!

Bob, thank you so much for your kind words. In Mobile, the amount of rain we have gotten is not particularly unusual. There are, of course, low lying areas where flash flood warnings have been in effect for a few days and I do not wish to minimize anyone's loss. Fortunately, we did not get as much rain as was predicted. For me, water still stands in the yard but there is no threat to the house. I am at the highest point in this area with an elevation of 80'! Hurricane Danny in 1997 had minimal hurricane winds but stalled in this area and dropped an enormous amount of rain; 33" was measured just a few hundred yards down the road from me and even more was recorded in some areas of Mobile County - I still had no threat to my home. I am in awe of how much rain Harvey has dropped and is still dropping - my mother in Kentucky is today experiencing a deluge from this same system. And the problems in Texas just seem to multiply. The healing from this will indeed take many years. I, too, pray for the victims.
