I have a 7200 and always format in-camera and have never had a problem. I format my cards as soon as I off-load the photos to be sure they're ready for my next shoot.

Nikon recommends the media cards should be formatted in the camera.

More importantly, so do I.

Canon also recommends formatting in camera. I always do a low level format the first time I use a card and then just standard format from that point on.

It's right on page 289 of your Users Manual.

I have extra cards for each camera. When I take cards out I replace them immediately and format in camera. You can use the menu (my choice) or the buttons. After downloading images those cards are kept with images until needed. That gives me a little extra time before wiping the images in case I screw something up in the computer.

I have two NikonDSLR's, D80 and a D610. I always format mi cards in camera, after downloading the RAW photo files to my laptop using the built-in card reader.

In-camera formatting is important. In addition to checking the card and preparing it for use, the format sets up the file structure that the camera system expects to see when storing images. There are usually two equally good ways to do it...with a two-button start or via a menu selection. I have found that they are equivalent.

As larrypage said, only format memory cards in the camera. Doing it on a PC or Mac will not work.

It may work, but may not work "properly", which is even worse.
