Thanks for your information on Larium. As a corpsman in Vietnam we were in the jungle most of the time and didn't have mosquito nets etc. I handed out CP tablets weekly to the marines, but many only pretended to take it. They felt like a few weeks out of the field with Malaria was preferable to life in a combat zone. I also handed out dapsone tablets for a form of malaria called falciparum. If memory serves, it was more prevalent in the northern part of south Vietnam and much more virulent. Dapsone came in a strip of 7 and was taken daily.
Nowdays, Malaria is not issue in Vietnam
To all the veterans here on UHH who served time in Vietnam...those still facing your ghosts, and those who have been able to move on...thank you for what you did/gave. Many of you may not have been given the respect you earned when you first came home, but all of us in the U.S. owe you a true debt of gratitude.
And the same goes for all others who have served...Thank You!
My wife and I took a 13 day trip their two years ago and loved it. I had been there courtesy of the Army in 1969. We booked a trip with a company that was wonderful providing a car, driver and guide for the Hanoi area, Central Highlands (where I was while there, An Khe), and Saigon and Mekong Delta. It was just my wife and I plus the driver and guide so we could stop anywhere we wanted, and while we had an inteneray we changed often. There are more photo opportunities at every turn than you can keep up with. If you are interested in the company we worked with send me a private message and I will be happy to provide that for you.
1969 was my trip. I will never go back!
Would Love to go back,,,,was mostly in the Central Highlands with the Paratroopers 68/69 humping a ruck up and down those Mountains,,,,except for the War and the Horrible Conditions,,,I thought the Country was Beautiful.....
Hospital corpsman with 1st MarDiv. Never saw beautiful.
I spent several weeks in Vietnam and Myanmar this past spring. Don't worry about things to photograph as the entire country is an absolute dream to shoot. Hanoi is especially lovely and I will definitely go back. Nihn Bihn is not far from Hanoi ( two hours by car) and very beautiful. I stayed at the Hanoi Metropole, one of the nicest hotels in Asia. I highly recommend it.

As long as there are rice paddies (which are everywhere, including the outskirts of major cities like DaNang), there will be mosquitos and malaria.
I often say that if it wasn't for the war it was the greatest camping trip ever. Every few days food (and water in the dry season) came out of the sky. I even ordered a new pair of boots when the sole disappeared from one of mine while crossing a river. It took about twenty minutes and my new boots were flying at me.
Then there was the "job".

My "taxi" for both tours, courtesy of the USMC and my squadron, HMM-265, was a Boeing CH-46A.
I never saw a vehicular taxi while there in 66-67.

I was not "blessed" with an all-expense paid tour in Vietnam, I served in Germany for 30 months -- it was hell, but somebody had to do it! My brother served there and goes back now twice a year and loves it. He is over there now and likes to go into the Central Highlands and visit with the montangards (spelling?) in their villages (not the tourist villages). Have a good trip!

...hahaha...I tried! Unfortunately the Army had different thoughts and gave me a free OH-6A transition right out of flight school! Blessed!
