So I am new to this habit. Would it be advisable to pick a genre of photography and focus on it or take a general approach and shoot anything and everything?

I say, consider shooting what interests you.
Your interests will probably change as you enjoy the journey!!!!

I shoot a little bit of everything. Shoot what interests you and figure it out over time.

Shoot a little bit of everything. Eventually you'll gravitate towards the genre that gives you the most satisfaction.

Do what you want to do, not what someone tells you to do.

Shoot whatever you want. Since you "want" to shoot it, that should make you happy. As time goes by, you'll find that you like some type of photography better than others. I do mainly landscape - no people to complain about posing or, "Not another picture of me!"

Generally go from general to you find something that really catches your eye and then specialize.

Shoot what interests you or what you like that you see. You'll probably do better if the subject has your interest as opposed to just shooting something (unless you are just recording an event). You'll find a genre that peaks your interest.

First, clear your mind...... Now take a piece of paper and write down your top ten interests. Now, on the other side of the sheet, prioritize those interests. Now - and this is very important, so don't mess it up - carefully and methodically wad up the piece of paper and throw it in the trash. Now pick up your camera, go for a walk (even if it's in you're own back yard) and take lots of pictures of ANYTHING that interests, amuses, intrigues, confuses or confronts you. In time, you will develop a specialty, if it is to be; if not, you'll be a general photographer. There is one rule: have fun! 😎

Not bad advice, but don't discount the first bit! My wife did something similar when she finally walked out on her previous long term partner. For some strange reason, she felt that I met her criteria.

Twenty-five years later we are still having loads of fun. We still have, and occasionally use her Nikon FM2n, but she loves her Canon DSLR.

So do go have fun, but it does help to know what is fun for you and why. It may help you get what you want, but it should help you get what you need!

I would say pick one, but don't marry it. I go looking for landscapes and nature shots. And sometimes I stumble on something else and go for it, too!

Advice that was given to me: If you want to be a good photographer, begin by shooting the things that you love (and don't stop 'til you get that perfect shot)! Me? I love fast women and fast cars:)

I started out working on a particular subject area--big mistake because I was missing so much. Shoot everything and see what fancies you. I have fallen into a few niches now, but I still shoot just about everything. I find it much more satisfying. Carry a camera everywhere, even if it's just your phone--they take pretty good photos, too, in a pinch.
