I am just starting out again, after the 35mm of my day. I have been using a Nikon D80. But the other day while on the Rogue River I got enough water on me and the camera to destroy the old D80. Now I have to go hunting for a different camera that I can work in to my budget.
My question is this do I understand correctly that all AF lens will work in any of the Nikon DX Cameras? The reason I ask is I have only a couple of lens but I like both of them and would prefer to continue to use them, besides when the boss sees the check book for a new camera she ain’t going to be real happy.
No. Go to the NikonUSA site to check compatibility.

The Nikon D3xxx and D5xxx series cameras don't have an internal focusing motor. Those cameras need Nikon's SWM (silent wave motor) lenses or similar third party lenses. Some are compatible with Nikon's new AF-P stepping motor lenses. Which lenses do you have now?
A few years ago I had a n-65, and when I decided to go Digital, I was told none of my lens would work with a digital camera.. I bought a Cannon...

...oh man, can't resist: Was it *loaded* when you bought it?
Buckshot... You want to buy a N-65 with two lens???
chasgroh, I know. I'd have had to, also
You can find a d90 or d7000 for a good price on craigslist. If you live in the rogue valley, I saw a craigslist post for a d7000 in k-Falls for $285. I upgraded from a d80 to a d7000 and my lenses worked great. I wanted to keep within a modest budget.

Or, look for EX-rated items at KEH.com. Marc52 beat me to the suggestion for used copies of the next model up (historically) from the D80.

Too bad. Depending on the lenses, you were probably fibbed to.

Get something from D7xxx on up, and it will have a focus motor. A refurbished D7100 or D7200 (or even used) wold be worth considering. Although Nikon lenses work on Nikon cameras (except for the new AF-P) either the camera or the lens will need a motor to focus automatically.
I went from a D50 to a D90 then to a D7000. All my D50 lens work. My advice is to consider any in the D7000 line, 71 or 72. I did not have a single problem learning the D7000;
Good morning .. if you are intrested I have a D 80 in great shape w/ a 55-200 and a 18-120 if my memory is correct for sale very reasonable or make an offer. Also a D700 w/26k clicks includes battery charger and manual email is (address removed) price for D700 is $600
