I just got back from Colorado Springs. Enjoyed it very much. I went up to Pike Peaks on the Pike Peaks Cog Railway. It cost me $40.00 round trip. If I ever get back, I will drive up to the summit. When you ride the Cog Rail, you can only stay at the summit about 30 minutes. Not sure what the cost is to drive up. Another great place to visit is Garden of the Gods. It's free.

I live in CO; you've mentioned all the good stuff I know, and much more. Thanks - and to others below.

You can find what's in this picture at the Wupatki National Monument, also great in color.

I will be driving from Kentucky to Colorado Springs next week for a three week road trip. I would appreciate any suggestions concerning best photo spots. I am planning several days in Colorado Springs to recuperate from the drive. I can include day hikes of 8-10 miles or roadside shooting spots. I hope to include stops at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Ouray, Telluride, Aspen and Rocky Mountain National Park. Thanks for any suggestions.

Great Sand Dunes National Park.

Thanks! We have two weeks and are going to try and cover as much and enjoy as much of the scenery as possible.
Two things to be aware of

(1) roads tend to go through valleys, so going between places may take a lot longer than you expect; they don't have a nice consistent grid of roads like we do in the "Northwest Territory".

(2) you should plan an entire day for each railroad - travel to/from may have to happen on separate days.

If you go to Ouray, take one of the Jeep tours across some of the higher passes (or rent a Jeep). Imogene is one of my favorites, but you can't go wrong with any of them. You'll get photos that most other tourists won't get.

I didn't get to read everybody suggestions but I wanted to chime in there. Since you'll be in Colorado Springs and somebody suggested you see the Broadmoor ( which is truly beautiful ) And right next door Is Cheyenne Mountain zoo! Enjoy some time there feeding the giraffes! I've had some of the funnest times taking up close pictures of the giraffes. And a few months ago a new giraffe was born there! she is still young And adorable. Be sure to drive up to the top of the mountain for the amazing castle ( called Will Rogers shrine of the sun) it come with the price of the zoo ticket and has a beautiful view of the Springs! Also, I love Colorado National monument. And as I sit here on my deck in Conifer (8500 feet) I JUST HEARD the elk bugling!!!! First time this season! Enjoy!!! Karina

Make sure you go to Durango and take the Silverton train ride and put time aside for Mesa Verde NP.

You will have so much fun! If you are from KY, I'd suggest that you stay off highways and you will be in heaven every step of the way.

along the way Mushroom Rocks State Park about 35 miles sw of Salina, Ks is interesting. Also Cathedral Rock and Monument Rocks south of I-70 in western Kansas are interesting but don't try going there if it has recently rained as the clay will roll up on your wheels. Wheeler Geologic Area near the Rio Grande west of Alamosa, Colo is beautiful but need 8-10 mile hike or very good high clearance 4-wheel drive vehicle to get there. Road or trail quite well marked.
