The two landlines that seem to be forever gone are the ones where you had Gert the Operator connect you and the one that used the 'longs' and the 'shorts.'

True John and the payphone is rapidly disappearing.

I also have a house that blocks all cell phone usage. Even the garage, that is only one story tall, is blocked. We still have a land line because we can block more calls with the Call Blocker box than anything else.

We still have our landline phone in case of power outages. Have thought many times of throwing it out the window as we get about a dozen or so calls a day from robo callers. They usually start about 0600 and continue well into the night. We both have an old flip phone and are starting to get robo calls on them. The ONLY people to have our flip phone numbers are family members. No such thing as peace and quiet in your own home anymore.

The solution to your issue is in the store or online. Its called a call blocker. Simple hook up and very effective and less than $100. Do a little research. There are also call blocker apps for you cell phone and some are provided free by your provider. No need to put up with uninvited, bothersome calls ever again. Good day.

I bet some of you guys that have land lines don't know that the landline is really a internet phone. The service is provide by the internet via landline. In other words take Magic jack. It's a phone service on your ipad, smart phone, computer etc but it's a service that it fed thru your internet not your regular telephone lines. Verizon tells me within 5 years you will be see less and less telephone lines thats why they are going to fios, high speed internet. The wave of the future. ok I open for corrections.

My land line is not an internet phone as you state, it is the old copper wire phone line. It works when the power goes out, when I lose the internet, etc. The only time it will go out is if a tree takes down the copper wires on the poles. I also have phone service with the cable company which is through the internet. I keep the copper line because it never goes out like the cable phone does, and also because I have a lifeline hooked to it which won't work if I lose the internet phone.

Verizon is trying to get everyone with copper lines to switch to FIOS, telling them they won't fix the line if it breaks or stops working, but I have been holding out for two years know. Keeping my fingers crossed it continues to work.
