I actually like the 2nd one better because it is kind of soft and it looks like the deer 's head is floating!

Since you asked---I don't like either one. The second is better (less distractions) but the deer is over exposed (left ear is really burned up) and the deer is clearly out of focus. Not soft focus--just plain out of focus. This shot was iffy from the get go as the lighting conditions are harsh creating extreme contrast which does not serve a purpose.

Just my poor opinion.

Ok, I get your point. Not a photographic prize by any means. I was just glad I got a photo of the deer.

Sometimes (most of the time for me) nature photography comes down to unplanned opportunities. I too, am just happy to get the photo. That being said I prefer #1, as it reflects the actual event.

I prefer the first one as it gives a context to what happened and would also "excuse" the out of focus. The second one would have been a winner if the focus had been there. Just my opinion. Be happy you got him before it become a lost opportunity

I like #1 best. I understand liking an image because it was a first catch. I recently took my first shot of a deer....it's no contest winner but I was happy that caught it. Good for you!

I like the first one the best. If it were me, I would crop the picture so that the deer's body is just elimimated on the right side (nothing but tree on the picture edge) and the top of the tree on the left side is touching the edge of the picture. In that way the trees act as a frame to focus all attention on the deer's head.

Nice capture!

thank you and you make a good suggestion about cropping.
