Hello Hogs,
Feeling a bit inadequate, but I need to ask anyway.
I am trying to learn flash modes on a Nikon D500 recently purchased, and finding that in my photo shooting menu, my "flash control" option is not lit enabling me to change flash modes, with or without my SB-910 attached, or with it "on" or "off".
I've tried several You Tube tutorials and none that I've chosen seem to address the issue
I know there has to be a setting somewhere that allows me to make these changes, but I just can't see where it is. The manual shows the modes, and it looks easy enough, but if the selection ain't lit, I can't make any adjustments.
I would appreciate some help.
Thanks Much!

Have you tried Nikon? It may be a defect in your camera.

No I haven't gone there yet, I didn't give that a thought, hoping that's not the case!!
Well, if I don't get any answers on this blog, I don't think anyone could help other than Nikon! Yikes!

Give Nikon a call. It is possible there is something they can help you do to change the way your camera is set up. And if they cannot, they will probably tell you to send it in. Better not to procrastinate, fear of the possibility of a problem with the camera will not help you to solve the issue! Instead, it is likely to prolong the agony/frustration. Don't ever be afraid to ask for help - amazingly those customer service/technicians usually know what to look for...

Reminds me of people who don't want to ask directions to get to a destination. Then they get lost and wish they had asked for help sooner!

You're absolutely right Susan. I always ask Siri when I'm lost LOL.
As it turns out, I found on the Nikonians blog, people having the same issue, and it's attributed to the fact that my SB 910 will not light it up! But, my first hot shoe flash, SB 400 does! I also learned it's not a big deal, since I can access all the modes and apparently, if I need to use remote units, the 400 will activate them, although I haven't tried it yet.
Maybe they will update the firmware to accommodate the 910 and other, not so inexpensive units. I was disappointed to read that.
Thanks for your reply.
I love Vermont!!!

I do not understand about the different flashes, since I only own an SB200 which I use for macro photography. But since the SB910 is an expensive unit, I still think a call to Nikon may end up with a satisfactory solution. As you suggest, it may be a firmware issue, and it would be nice to find out what kind of "fix" there is!

I love Vermont too! Spent time in Elmont, NY working at Belmont Park years ago. Luckily the racetrack is a world unto itself, because outside there is too much traffic! I did not stay there all the time, of course - found some places with good food and reasonable prices to eat at, where to go for good bagels and Italian pastries, also did a little exploring elsewhere on the island.

Put the flash on the camera turn camera on turn flash on there should be a mode dial on the flash .I have an sb800 that is where my mode dial is at. I own a d810. I don't own a d500.

My understanding is that only the new Nikon flash is completely compatible with the D500.

Well Wes, that's what I gleaned from the Nikonians blog where I found folks with same issue.
Kind of "funky" that Nikon would render a flash like the 910, not completely compatible.

Thanks for the reply WesIam
