If I remember, and perhaps you can help me as it has been years, is there a white plastic piece on either the top left or right side of the outside viewfinder. It may be 1/8" x 3/4". That is what lets in the illumination. If you look in the viewfinder at an angle instead of straight through you miss either the left or right side. The Minolta XE series had the same issue because the eyepiece is so small.
First I do know that the viewfinder has very high magnification and the eyepiece is small plus the fact that the scale is outside of the image area so it's difficult to see unless looking at an angle. However, the scale is very dark and yes there is a plastic piece on top of the prism and it's clear. If I shine the flashlight there I can see the scale very well. In daylight I could barely see the scale, it's very dim. In door it's dark. I guess the silver on the "light pipe" went bad and needs a lot of light to illuminate the scale sufficiently.
