On a radio report this morning it was said the moon is slowly receding from the earth, i.e. its orbit is enlarging. So at some point the moon will not cover much of the sun. It was said to be about 1 1/2 inch per year. Might have the year part wrong as I was only half listening. Which brings me to asteroids. Do many of them hit the moon - what if a really big one bump the moon into a very different orbit. Would we be planning photographic events for, say, North Star eclipses.
The sun is 400 times farther from the earth than the moon, and the moon is 400 times smaller than the sun. They coincide perfectly, but that won't last forever. The moon used to be a lot closer to the earth, and the earth used to spin a lot faster. The only constant is change.
