Just back from our first African Safari - one of those deals where you have to keep pinching yourself to make sure its real.

Out of respect, I wanted my first post of the trip to be in this section.

He's beautiful, scars and all. It's very crisp - I can see every hair in his ruff. My only niggle is that you're looking down on him instead of straight into his face. I realize that wasn't possible, and the image you got was great. If it were a perfect world. . . .

One morning I hung my camera upside down by my monopod by the edge of the vehicle in order to get a lower perspective of a sleeping lion. Our guide (gently) chewed me out for that. When they walk right by the vehicle like this on did, you don't even make a sound or hardly move. A male is 400 lbs. of pure muscle, teeth and claws. A very efficient killing machine.

Of course I realize that. And I understand the shot. I'd be VERY happy if it were mine. It's interesting how close you obviously were.

What a gorgeous big cat! And even more so on download! Great detail, looking so steady and benign...but certainly a king and obviously a warrior who has survived a few battles. I actually am drawn to this perspective, wondering what he is so focused on.

This is beautiful. I really like the tight crop it it gives him just a touch of menace in the pensive look that he has. Kind of saying I may look like a big cat but watch out.
The lighting is gorgeous.

Thank you Carlysue. Never found out what he was intent on. He and his brother walked right by us and wandered off in the bush.

Actually Mama, it is full frame, zero crop and I was zoomed in to 200 on my 200-500 lens. It's somewhat intense when 400 pounds of killing machine walks by within arms reach.

Three weeks of getting up over an hour before sunrise and staying out evenings till dark earned us lots of gorgeous light.
