With dark-skinned people, getting the complexion just right is trickier than most people would think. I suspect that you've done a fair bit of experimenting in that department, and you seem to have found a style that suits the subjects. Have you tried a tinted background instead of white?

I haven't tried a tinted background, this was an off the cuff capture coincidentally against a white wall. it's an idea, I will try adding various tints to see what looks good.

We adopted Lewis and his sister over 30 years ago and I was married to his mother for a while so, yes, I've had a lot of experience photographing dark skins.

Well done image, a bit soft and grainy but seems to work here. The key for this image is really the captured expressions which you managed well from a good perspective. Nice job...

Thanks, Frank. It was a quick indoor shot grabbed without any artificial lighting. The ISO was 8000 so quite grainy (5D Mk IV). Rather than attempt to reduce the grain I enhanced it in Capture One Pro and reduced saturation to 50% to give the effect.

Yes, as others are saying, the processing suits the subject very nicely. Dave Chinn and I had a discussion with his recent post of a black lady - skin texture can be difficult to nail, but you've cracked it here I think. Also like the plain background, it works well for me.

I'm working on a portfolio called "Paternity". I like this image a lot. Lewis has charisma and its in the photo powering the image. I like the plain white background (symbolizing purity?) and desaturated color. For me the grain is just OK, I think the graininess works but, again, for me, maybe a tiny bit less. Very nice image, thanks for sharing.

It says your online now over in Spain. Wow. Insomnia? I understand.

Thanks very much. I will play with the grain settings I used.

6.30pm here in Seville so just about to take our 4 dogs for their evening run and then prepare dinner. Prawn salad today as the temperature is 32C (90F) at the moment.

I am sorry, but there is something odd about their complexion and I should know too.

Just below Lewis's arm looks over exposed. Only my opinion (smile).

Thanks for commenting Heather. The 'overexposure' is part of a white vignette that doesn't show at the top or sides because of the light background. I have removed it in other versions.

I guess one either likes or dislikes the halftone complexion. For me, it works.

Hi Raf

Thanks for your explanation. I never thought of a white vignette, so I have learnt something. I am glad you didn't take offence regarding my comment on the complexion. There was a lot of love portrayed in that photo.

Have a good day.

Thanks, Heather. Not at all. If we all liked the same thing it would be a boring old world. I appreciate your input.

Yes, there is a lot of love there even more now that Lexi has come along. This is Lexi with Lucy, her very proud mum...
