A random thought from BK

Hi,
As you know, I don't do the "give them all the digital files" as part of my business practice. BUT, as your friendly "idea guy", I was replying to a post in the main section about "how do you enjoy your photos" http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-477920-4.html#8028769 and I had a brain storm for some of you that choose to go a different route with your photography.

How about this? To REALLY set yourself apart, instead of handing the couple a disk.....give them the photos on an SD card or thumb drive, already inserted in a digital photo frame? Yes, the couple can buy one themselves, the point is, to set yourself apart. Many people will never print those files, and they will end up lost forever. If it's in something larger than a card or DVD, (like a frame) it won't be lost, AND they will have the photos displayed on the wall for as long as they would like.

Anyway, again, not in my business plan to go to giving out files instead of albums, but.....for those of you that do. A nice (not tiny) digital frame, in a nice presentation box, with the images on the SD card could make you a ROCK STAR.

Hope that helps someone who is looking for their own niche to set them apart.

Carry on.....and enjoy!

Thanks. I realize that we all have different policies with our businesses. The main point is to always come up with something that sets you head and shoulders above the competition.

I'm fairly certain that you can't talk to 20 random strangers, without at least one of them saying they are a photographer, or one of their relatives is.

If you choose to compete by doing the same thing they do, you will get lost in the shuffle.

Very creative! I will add that to the discussion with my next client....(no copyright on the idea I assume.. :-)

What I do is offer a cheap 20-40 page photobook with the deal. My cost is only $50 delivered to their home and they have something on their coffee table while they spend 2years to infinity trying to decide what to do with the mountain of pictures they have (yes, I am one of those that provides a digital dropbox link of a pile of photos).

It costs me about 2-4hrs extra time to select and arrange the photos. I do 1 for the engage and 1 for the wedding day. I select the photos and decide the layout. Sooo much easier than an emotion laden decision on a $700 wedding album that sits in the closet like fine china that never gets used.

...had the brides mom show up at my door a year later asking for a reprint as the daughter never got around to deciding on a fine art album. 5minutes on the computer and it was on the way to her....

Something else I started doing is sending them a photo-a-day while I grind through the editing....they love it !

Not sure of the pros and cons of the above but welcome crtitique as I am still a relative newbie in this game.....I expect to be in it for the long haul.

Keep those ideas coming Bob! You probably remember this one.

Seriously, I may look for some reasonably priced photo frames with decent quality.

If you don't mind sharing. What photobook source do you use? I have been offering high end albums at my cost for the first taker, but no takers. Not much interest in spending the money for an album. My concern with low cost photobooks is the quality of the presentation.

Photobooks Canada.
They go by photobooks <country> . Ie think there is a photobookusa etc. Books are made and shipped from Malaysia. Quality is photobook quality.....ie not fantastic but its only $50. Paper is not photopaper.

Its an alternative ...

for lower cost albums, Adoramapix does a pretty good job with the lay flat albums, and silk paper. Pretty heavy paper, I've had consistent results, and the one time I had a problem, they fixed it immediately with no questions asked (other than "how can we make you happy?")

You can get a 40 page 8x8 for less than $100. Not sure what you call "low cost" but the few that I've seen from Costco were actually awful in my opinion. The paper was heavy, which is nice, but it is glossy, and shows a lot of waves in the finish. For about the same cost, you can get something that sure seems a lot higher in value.
