Here's a Youtube link to a 1 hour long talk by Brian Shul, a pilot of an SR 71. He piloted an SR 71 for 4 years. His story is awesome. Before he flew the SR 71 he was shot down in combat and spent a year in the hospital. He's an inspirational speaker and has a great sense of humor.

My uncle sent this to me and I thought it was just great. It certainly filled me with pride for America. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

The SR-71 is a great plane. It has been mothballed, and is not generally serving now...though it is sometimes called back to service for special missions. I was in USAF, and stationed on Okinawa in the 1970s, and we had several SR-71 planes. We called them the "Habu." In the mornings they flew out to pass over various targets-Viet Nam, China, Russia, etc-and at night they came back with lots of good intel. My best friend worked in the Photo wing, and processed images shot by the Habus. I was a medic, and performed hearing tests on the pilots, and health & safety inspections of the hangars, and such. I got close up to the planes, and was always interested in the SR-71s.

The SR-71 arrived on Okinawa after my time there, but I certainly remember the real habus. A nasty looking and very dangerous snake and to this day, clearly remember the first time I saw one in a bottle of sake.

As with many of the SR-71 stories, this one is fantastic. It is also fantastically funny.

Thanks for sharing this, Dennis! Love it! The SR-71 has always fascinated me. Back in the early '80's, my husband and I went to an air show at Port Hueneme, a Naval air base near Oxnard, California. An SR-71 was going to do a flyby.

We could hear it long before we could ever see it. It flew at near stall speed a few feet off of the runway, and when at the end, gave it what I assume was full throttle. The roar was incredible as it disappeared very quickly, and we could still hear it long after we lost sight of it. I'll never forget that experience! It was incredible!!!

That is pretty nice. I used to live in Oxnard in the late 80's. Camarillo prior to that and Carpinteria prior to that.

Glad you liked the video.

As a matter of fact, this little part he has a link to is from the same guy, Brian Schul from that 1 hour long video that I posted the link to. It was a great story and he's a great motivational speaker.

The SR-71 that is at the March Air Field Museum in Perris, CA used to be stored outside. It is now in the Museum Building at the request of the government to prevent deterioration.

Good. They shouldn't let it turn to shit. It's a great piece of history. Now that we have satellites that can take pictures from space, we don't need the SR-71's. But they are cool.

I remember hearing this story, and I think it's true... Some of you might have heard this.

Back when the Sandinistas were ruling Nicaragua and giving the US so much trouble, an SR-71 flew low over the capitol city scaring the population out of a year's growth. My understanding is that some people got into trouble over that.

I just LOVE this aircraft. I've been lucky enough to see a couple of them. If I'm not mistaken, they still hold some all time speed records. Can the Skunk Works build outrageous aircraft or what?😎 Thanks for posting.

I believe the Blackbird still holds the coast to coast record. 64 minutes 20 seconds

That was the LA to DC time. The surf line to surf line was just under 68 minutes. I was getting in my car to go to work and glanced up just as it popped over the western horizon from my home in Azusa, CA and watched the contrail go all the way to the eastern horizon. I have never seen a contrail grow anything near that fast. The closest was a pair of F-16s taking off from March Air Base south of Riverside and turn to go patrol over LA right after 9-11. They were down at only a couple thousand feet so the horizon was a lot less distance for them to disappear.
