A jury decided that a Dallas couple who trashed their wedding photographer online, a story that got world-wide circulation, committed malicious defamation that destroyed the photographer's business, and has awarded the photographer $1 million in damages.

Good! Serves them right! I just researched a muffler company I used years ago and there are 5 anonymous bad ratings in a row five years ago that brought their Google rating from what should be at least 4.9 down to a 2.9. Obviously someone spamming the ratings but I'm sure it hurt their business.

These days it takes only one pissed off customer to wreak havoc online, and there are some people who do it not because they're angry, but because they don't have anything more useful to do with their time and skills.

The problem with these high-dollar Awards is that most of them were never paid out because the people don't have the money.

And in the meantime, the photographer has lost her business, blown through her retirement and life savings, and will probably never see a penny of the money awarded. The despicable couple have appealed the juries decision and who knows what a judge decides. Hopefully the juries decision holds up and the couple has to pay out, even if its in small installment payments, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that to happen.
