My boys like to hunt in the fall and winter - I like to go with with and take pictures from the blind. Last year I brought my Sigma 50-500 with Canon 7Dmii - and it was not enough reach for some of the animals. So I was thinking this year to buy a Sigma 2X teleconverter, but the reviews are so mixed - I though maybe a Nikon P900 would be just as good as my DSLR, because they say you loose so much quality with the converter. So anyone have the Sigma 2X converter?? What do you think, do you loose enough quality to just go with the P900 or are those reviews exaggerated?

The P900 has gotten good reviews, and members have posted excellent pictures here.

We have one which my wife uses and I use the Sony RX10iii or my a6000 with various lenses. If you can get the bird or critter to 1/2 as big as you want it with a better lens & sensor then that's the right answer (post process it) but if not, the P900 (in decent light) will be the best for that instance. All the criticisms are true except that it does do a good job of IS even at 2000 mm and the AF is good for a bird if you set it for P and spot focus. Shutter priority is good, too. Low light is crap and you can't enlarge the center portion much without seeing noise and pixel smearing.

But many times the P900 gets a good picture where the shorter lens simply cannot.

The plain math tells the story. How many pixels OF THE SUBJECT will you get? The P900 is very pixel-dense and the angle of view is spectacular. For example, if you use 50 mm as a rule of thumb for 1X in a telescope then 2000 is a 40X lens. Never mind the 83X that Nikon advertises because that is the zoom ratio. But where can you get a decent, IS scope with 40X for $600? When we are out snapping birds no matter what camera I am using we sometimes have to use hers. Birds simply don't cooperate sometimes.

You loose quality and a significant amount of light when using a 2x converter just because you do not want to spend the money for what it takes to do the job. They is nothing you can do to change the laws of optics and make it do something it was not intended to do.

This has nothing to do with money - why would you assume that? I was simply wondering which option would give me the best results... Why are you so nasty, could you please never respond to one of my questions again.

Okay, Tommi! You know you really want that P900! I can see the twinkle in your eyes. So do it! Priced under $500 on Amazon.

Have fun learning and loving your new Camera. And yes the P900 will never compete with a good quality DLSR and good quality lens. But then, I don't think it really was ever intended to! It has its place.
