Gloomy waterfall

Hey all - here's another waterfall from my excursion to the Berkshires in June. I really didn't expect to do anything with this one (i'm working on a calendar project), but after some tinkering, i kind of like what it became. It made me wonder what others would do with this gloomy shot. I've attached the original, my rendition, and the link to a TIFF file if you'd be of a mind to tinker as well. I used Lightroom for the basic adjustments and then NIK ColorPlus for the detail and fog. It actually was a foggy, drizzly day, though the NIK additions took the fog up a step. Comments, contributions, and your versions are welcome. Thanks for any offerings!

The modified file feels washed out to me. Given the above permission, I'm posting my copy after fiddling with it for about 2 or 3 minutes in LightZone. I brought up the darker mid-tones a little bit, add some vibrance, as well as some clarity. The composition is very good. I do not see anything that needed cropping, or cloning.

Remember, it is all subjective so you might like it more the way you did it over anyone else's version.

Here's my offering, Marylea. As this may be for a calendar project it may not be the perfect subject angle. People are going to look at this for maybe a month. Imagine it from a different angle to give it more impact. Each time the owner of the calendar looks at the image will they say "Wow, love that picture!"? That's what you are aiming for. While you are thinking about it . . . my version is not good enough either.

Tinkered a little bit with it. Brighten it up a bit. To me the lightened area of the fog was distracting from the falls. I tend to look at the lightest area of a print first. The main thing is what you like and what you see and want others to see.

What's so gloomy? So the light in the woods is limited--that's they way it is! I like the original better, but I much prefer to see running water look like water, not thin grey ribbons.

I liked this shot and using lightroom I warmed up the white balance a bit did some basic exposure adjustments highlights down, shadows down, whites up blacks down and using the local brush brightened the water some of the lighter rocks and darkened the dark rocks (gives it more contrast), and then added some blotches of brighter exposure (simulating spots of sun and reflections.. All done in Lightroom in less than 5 minutes

OK, hmmm . . . interesting takes here. I guess Jerry summed it up well when he said it's all subjective. I will say that after some study, my fog isn't the greatest, but it was a foggy day, and the folks who will see this calendar live in the area, so this is a known site to them. I just wanted to change it up a little from their average sunny day visit. I'll keep tinkering. I really appreciate everyone's input. It's all good - and i've got some time before 2018 rolls in! Thanks again for all your suggestions and help.

I get the modifications. The modifications you applied take you to the moment and tell a story. The misty feel of the result is very nice. Making it crystal clear may be technically appealing (to some), but your modifications have heart and show a real artistic vision.

Keep up the good work.
