What is the LARGEST size of any decent quality can I make with my D3400 and the kit lens:
18-55mm VR f/3.5-5.6G VR .... 70-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED Zoom Lens

I'm thinking about a portrait of the family. I'm sure the above lens are somewhat limiting....but thats why i'm asking.

Depends on a few things, the ISO set on camera, how well in focus the shot is and if you crop your photo that you will print, last the type of photo paper and who will make the print. you can have your photo printed on canvas or metal or just about any surface. check out Bayphoto.com

do a quick Google for: print size image size. example, 8 x 10 print size is 2400 x 3000 pixels. Use your camera quality settings and your PP program Your for lenses high end of 55 or low end of 70 and adjust. use a good tripod and speedlight or off camera lighting. Your lenses are not too fast so you will lots of light.

If the image is sharp and well exposed, you can generate very large prints using programs like On1 Resize. The largest print I have in my home (above the fireplace) is 24x36 made from a 12 megapixel Nikon.

With 24mp, pretty much as big as you want. There is no law that says a big print HAS to be 300 ppi. Truth is, the bigger the print, the lower ppi. Multiplex cinema screens running Sony 4K are only 8.8 mp, which should give you a sense.

I'm sure you've seen the Apple iPhone billboards that display images taken with the tiny-sensor 8 or 12 mp iPhones. It's all about viewing distance and the eye's ability to see and resolve fine detail.

I used a D300 for the photo that I use for my ID here with UHH. I took that photo to 40x60 through Bay Photo, with no retouching, and mounted it on canvas. The canvas does diffuse the photo somewhat, but it is extremely well detailed, even at 40x60. It was shot at ISO 400 (because it was dusk and a bit of low light for a handheld shot) for 1/5 sec and a 17mm zoom length setting. This is a downloadable version.

That is subject matter dependent! It also depends on your skill.

1) Use a tripod and the very lowest ISO you can set on your camera.
2) Compose for the aspect ratio of the intended print size. That's the ratio of width to height (W:H).
3) Using the entire viewfinder area would give you a 6000x4000 pixel file. This would make a 25" x 16.667" print at 240 PPI (that's shorthand for original pixels from the camera file, spread over each linear inch of paper). 240 PPI is known as "extinction resolution" --- the minimum number of pixels per inch needed to produce the full amount of detail your eye can resolve at 13 inches. HOWEVER, since most people don't view a 25" wide print from 13", but instead back off to about 30" or more to see the full canvas, for most subject matter, you can make at least a 50" x 33.333" print, and view *that* from 60" to see about the same detail.

The exceptions to this would involve subjects that WILL be pixel-peeped at extremely close distances, such as a group of 100 people, or a finely detailed landscape or cityscape, and scenes that are cropped significantly in post-production.

Along with all the other replies, it depends on what material the photo is printed on. I have found that photographic paper requires the best picture, followed by glass, acrylic, wrap, metal, canvas, and cloth. So if you're printing your picture on a cloth curtain to hang over the window in the office, just about any resolution will look pretty awesome. The same resolution might look a little crappy if printed the same size on photographic paper.

I think we need to know what is your meaning of wall print. Are you thinking of a 16 x 20 say, or a full wall mural (8' H x 10' wide for instance)

I don't see where the lens is important. If the lighting is OK, the picture will be OK. Megabytes are large on any camera if you have it set to best quality.

Megabytes will vary (greatly) from shot to shot, depending on the level of detail and the file format. Megapixels will remain the same.
