Solar Eclipse Glasses

Solar eclipse glasses can be found for just a couple of dollars, but be sure they are good enough. From NASA, "The space agency recommends glasses from U.S. manufacturers American Paper Optics, Rainbow Symphony, Thousand Oaks Optical or TSE 17. The glasses must have the "ISO" icon with a designation of ISO 12312-2."

I got two pairs at Lowe's for about $2.00 each. They are "The Eclipser" brand, made by American Paper Optics, one of the NASA-approved companies.

Solar eclipse glasses can be found for just a coup... (show quote)

Thanks for the info, I'm looking into a filter for the camera now. But wonder what there will to shoot, a white circle getting smaller then bigger. Guess I'm missing the point.

I understand. Think of it as a lunar eclipse in color.

For the middle school camera club I advise we don't have money for real filters. I find that half of a paper eclipse glass works fine. Trim it to size and tape it to the back of a uv (clear) filter with black tape. 1/500 sec, f/8, ISO 800 works for me.

I bought a solar filter from B&H and a 10 pack of solar glasses. They will work fine for our kids and their kids, leaving one of the solar glasses for us.

Enjoy the eclipse and the kids! I hope your weather is good.

By the way, if you use the solar glasses as a filter on a camera, be sure to cover the lens (aside from the solar filter!) with the black tape to exclude light. The filter has an attenuation of 1-million (20 stops), so any stray light will be bad for the image.

Won't be using the glasses with the camera. That's what the solar filter is for. And, my wife will be taking pictures using the view screen on the T5i, not looking through the view finder. I'll be looking for traffic while flying the plane.

Eye mart is giving the eclipse glasses away free to anyone who asks.
