To take photos of the solar eclipse coming a couple of weeks I plan on using my D800 with the Nikon 200/500 lens. I've read about solar filters but all I see are these models that get wrapped around the lens. What am I not understand?

Thanks

Some of the solar filters are mounted on a ring that slips over the ends of the lens, see the ones from Thousand Oaks Optical. They also make solar filters that screw into the ends of the lens.

If you do searches on amazon, ebay, B&H, etc. you will find dozens of different types of solar filters that mount in different ways, everything from very low cost ones that are manually held in front of the lens to ones that thread on the lens like regular filters and cost $100 plus, and ones that clip on a lens in different ways. Keep in mind that the filter has to be removed during totality and replaced before totality ends so ease and quickness of removal and reinstallation can be important.

B&H also has an excellent discussion on all aspects of photographing the eclipse that I found very helpful in planning for it. Another similar discussion is at MrEclipse.com.

If you will be in 100% totality you will not need a solar filter. Most pro sun shooters say to specifically be sure to remove a solar filter at totality.
