John and Jane lived together for a few years. They decided to get married.
They put down $1,000 to hold the date. which was 6 months later.
A month later Jane comes in, she wants the $1000. back, they broke up.
Next Day John comes in, say they broke up and HE wants the $1000.

The check had both names on it.
What to do? I can think of a few ways to solve it, but its fun reading your ideas.

question 2, if you could only take one lens to shoot a wedding what would it be?

I would tell John and Jane to work it out and let me know.

If only one lens, I would take the 24-70. Wide enough and fast enough to cover everything. Unfortunately, I would have to get closer than desired during the ceremony.

In my particular contractual terms it is stipulated that DEPOSITS AND RETAINERS are NON-REFUNDABLE in the event of cancellation. So...John and Jane would be totally out of luck.

Now! This may seem harsh to some of y'all. All that policy does is give me the option of refunding the money or not. If I feel that the customer has suffered a serious financial setback, an illness or other extenuating circumstances I will make the refund. If there is enough time for me to replace the date, I may refund the money as well but all of this is at MY OPTION.

I have both the bride and the bridegroom sign the contract- they are jointly responsible so that if any disagreement should occur between them, it is their business to settle their differences between themselves and not involve me. Which person signs the check or submits his or her credit card is irrelevant. Even a 3rd party can pay for my services as a gift but the couple still needs to sign the contract.

Lens? The 24-70 is a good choice for sure! I however, never shoot a wedding with one camera or one lens simply because of breakdown potential. If anything goes wrong, I can complete an entire wedding coverage with a simple prime normal lens. Used to do that in the olden days with fixed lens TLRs and press cameras. The results are surprisingly good- just a bit inconvenient what with all that walking back and forth to different distances without a zoom but its good exercise!

I hope this helps!

Ditto to what Ed said. The "non refundable deposit" is right at the top of my terms. Remember, you took the money to hold the date. You "could have" booked that date with someone else and gotten full price. If you think about it, you lose in the deal if someone cancels and all you get is the deposit.

If it were a death or something like that, not just breaking up, then I'm happy to work with someone.

On the second question, I'm still using APS C so I will continue to use lenses that give me the same field of view as the 24-70, and 70-200. That's why my "holy trinity" for weddings is my 18-55 2.8 VR and Sigma 50-150 2.8 VR. If I had to choose one, it would be the 18-55, so I could get the "getting ready photos" in a smaller room.

I finally saved up enough for my D-500 *(still APS C), but they stopped the promo that included a genuine Nikon battery grip, so I'm holding off until they have a promotion that includes something I want.......or can sell and get some of my money back.
