I shoot B&W film mostly for personal reasons. I shoot digital color either to share with family or because someone has asked that I shoot an event. If I could not share, I would likely shoot almost exclusively film.

I find the reaction of others to my work very interesting, and I would miss that. I find that my preferences often differ from others.

I am very interested in film developing and exposure and that would continue.

I would probably shoot less, only because I buy blank calendars which have about a 5 inch by 7 inch space for the pic and glue strips. I shoot mostly flowers at flower shows and gardens. I live in Los Angeles County, about halfway between San Diego and Santa Barbara, and at one time would go to all of the shows between both cities. The calendars are for my 3 kids and some lifelong friends. Some of the places I go to are Descanso Gardens, known for its Camellias and the Huntington Library (The original Pinky and Blue Boy pictures are here) known for a moon bridge in the Japanese Garden, and Chinese Garden. Both places are not to be missed. Also I try not to miss the Rose Parade floats which can be seen immediately after the parade and the next day. The floral displays are superb. I am 85 years old and do film, now with an old Vivitar and a classic Pentax SMC Takumar 50mm 1.4 and a #2 closeup filter to simulate macro. I have many (Praktica NOT Pentax) screw mount lenses that I don't use because I can't hold them steady. Sad.

Not sad that you are 85 years old, it would be sad if you didn't reach that age. Sure, capabilities change, but so long as life is fun, keep doing what you enjoy. My mother-in-law, my favorite party animal, hits 90 this December, and she has three older siblings that still like to party!

Here's the eldest at her 97th birthday party!

If 'yes', would you take fewer pictures or find photography a bit less interesting?

Every thing that I have been involved in, from saltwater fishing, water sking, snow sking, road cycling and photography was never to please others or because it was the " In Thing to do" it was because of my love of sports
and the outdoors. Years ago I got involved wit flat water kayaking and combine this and photography. The subjects that I have photographed for my self and others, I have done so because of a connection that I have with what I photograph.
For me to share what I photograph shows what can be produced with a camera and that it might inspire others to get into photography. By sharing my work with others it has opened photograph doors. I have been requested to photograph events at the correctional facility that I work at, and the outdoor weddings of three co-workers.

Photography is like fishing......
some people want the fish...others enjoy the fishing.

I enjoy the time I spend 'taking photo's' and sod the result. Occasionally I get an image that I really like (a fish) so print it at A3 and stick it on the wall.

I don't need the pressure of taking holiday snaps for the wife or portraits of the kids parties, weddings, christenings.etc..everyone now has a camera.... let someone else get an earful !!!

I love the peace and quiet of wandering alone ' 'doing' photography'.

PS: I have a cell phone ---for when I....want to phone someone. Don't leave messages cause I may not read them for a week or so!

I bought it: I say what it gets used for.

Each to their own

have fun

I like the analogy about fishing! While it is nice to get positive feedback on my efforts, photography has always been about enjoying the "fishing" to me!

No. Taking pictures and not sharing them with anyone reminds me of playing tennis alone against a wall, or driving in an empty parking lot, or getting all dressed up to stay at home alone. To me, there's no point to it.

Finally! Thanks Bob!

There seems to be a general consensus that nobody cares what others think. Pretty sad from where I sit and part of our greater societal divide. Also likely not true anyway-- or at least I hope it isn't! UHH, is after all, a form of social media.

I love finding others who share one or more of my passions.....

The reason we marry, attend worship services, attend concerts, sporting events, etc is because we are social.

Steps off soapbox...
End of rant....
No need to flame me.

Have a great day!

Out.

I shoot for myself as I find that I am my harshest critique. However, I do share my work with friends through a website and allow anyone to view the website. I am always interested in others opinions even if not favorable as I find that the only way I get better is to expose the work to the opinion of another. May not work for you and that is ok, but if you are interested in improving your images, criticism seems to be a really good way to achieve that goal.

I rarely ever share my photographs, so it doesn't matter.

Yes, I shoot for me anyway. If someone really likes it, that is cool too. I'm my own worst critic. I've looked at so many images by the "masters" over the years I can tell what is truly special in any of mine (a few from time to time), and ones by contemporaries (and even some UHH).

Problem is my friends seem to like everything, even my crappy shots. I know better and so I try to please myself which is not easy. Occasionally I'll get a legitimate critique from a photographer friend or instructor. That can hurt at times. One way to learn.

Being that photography is an art , it depends if one needs feedback . Some musicians need to be heard , as some photographers need to be seen . However people who record every moment to be " shared " on the Internet in my opinion are not photographers . That's like keeping minutes at a board meeting .
As for me , I shoot for personnel enjoyment as I play guitar and keyboards for the same reason . However there are times when I play something or write a song that I need someone's opinion on , or I just think its good enough that I'd like to play it for someone . Same thing for that occasional jaw-dropping photo grab . 😃

Exactly! I have artist friends who paint, play music, sculpt, and write creatively, and I love their work, and they enjoy mine. I think finding people you can connect with on that creative level is fun and stimulating, and I can't imagine not being a part of that. I don't share particularly often or obsessively, but when I create an image I find compelling, I like to share it.

It's for me although I do frame some and give them as gifts to mark shared events/experiences.
