Forget image stabilization. Use a tripod.

Some times that is not possible. My next trip will be to Germany and my camera bag requirements will be 6 X 11 X 12, a size imposed by the tour company. With the equipment I am planning to take, I will be be able to shoot 14-28mm f2.8, 24-200mm f4, and 180mm f2 macro in 35mm terms, plus two flashes and some filters. There is no room for a tripod plus this equipment in that 6 X 11 X 12 size. Yet I know I will be able to handhold at least to 5 seconds. Why take a tripod if one can do without it? I think the OP this actually going in the right direction for his needs.
