Renaming files on download

I was looking at another thread http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-474574-1.html#7965904 and got to thinking about file names.

The default file names are usually not helpful. Do any of you automatically rename files on download? If you do, what is your process?

Thanks

I use Better File Rename.
I download the files then batch change the names.
For example a trip to Florida, I might change the names to
Florida 2017 01.jpg
Florida 2017 02.jpg
Florida 2017 03.jpg
Florida 2017 04.jpg

etc.

I name image files "YYMMDD Subject Other Info Number (if needed)" where Subject might include very brief (one or two word) description and Other Info might include PP tools/addins

When I download, I save my file to a folder usually the date (i.e. 07202017 or WHALE WATCH 07982017, etc.) That way I know at least something about the download! After download I go back in the folder (file) and match each photo to my notebook or memory of the scene! A lot of extra work, but once done, I can transfer, each type of photo to it's proper folder, i.e. birds, Barns, trees, lakes, you get the idea!

Just another note, if you do not name your photo, you could over write another photo of the same date or number if you reset your camera for some reason! Some great shot might unexpectedly disappear!

Do you do that on download or after? If on download, what do you use to do it?

Might be a dumb question (but I do not know the answer) on my part . . will this batch rename include the Raw files too?
I shoot RAW and JPG
Thanks

I usually put the memory card in the laptop, bring up Bridge, delete any mistakes, select the ones to keep for now and pass them to Image Processor Pro in Photoshop. Then go get a coffee while the process works.
That will rename, resize if needed and place them in a folder. The new name can be anything but usually is the gig and the date with a sequence #.

On download.
I use ACDSee or PhotoMechanic.
The files are renamed and some keywords added at that point as well.

What Tet68survivor said. It's easy to overwrite and lose pics if you don't rename them. Some of my great ones are gone.

When I download from a SD card I make a folder in my pictures lable it (YNP0617) Yellow Stone July 2017, download to the folder edit the photos then import to LR. I'm sure there are dozens of ways, it works great for me.

Good question: It goes essentially to file (photograph) organization by file naming.

Files properly named allow the user to locate them more readily at later time. Give files a shorthand name that indicates the file content. For example, if the files contain pictures of a wedding, then use a filename that includes the term "wedding."

Here's what I do using Adobe Camera Raw downloader. First, after the files appear in the downloader, I give a name to the folder where the downloaded files will go.

Second, I give a name to the files themselves.

Third, I browse the hard drive for the location where I want the files to go.

The right-hand panel in the downloader presents each of these steps.

I encourage you to take the time to do each of these steps for an orderly file organization that later will help you find your files.

Note that using Adobe Bridge, you can search for downloaded files by parts of the name of the file. Note further that Bridge does not require uppercase or lowercase characters in the search term. So for example, if you named files "Birthday 2017 for Cecil," then you could search for the term "cecil."

I hope this answer helps you with this important matter.

I don't take so many photos that I have enough in folder to get a second one with the same name.
I don't know about Mac, but for Windows: little chance of that happening anyway, everytime I try to store or save a file with a name that's already in use, I'm asked "File name already used, do you want to overwrite?" (or something similar, can't remember the exact wording).
The only thing I do to photos, once they're in the (dated) folder I want them, is to add tags, using File Explorer.
