Mr. Burkholder,

Thank you for the advice. I would like to know your thoughts on the following questions about the Lumix G85: Many reviewers love everything about the camera except for the AF function and will the M43 sensor perform well when attempting to photograph the night sky? I guess that I am a bit skeptical about the M43 sensor and its capabilities in relation to the APS.

Again, thank you for responding to my query and I look forward to reading your thoughts.

Between the Sony 6300 or 6500 I believe my 6300 does not have stabilization. The 6500 has touchscreen with mediocre reviews.
I have it with the 16 70 zeiss lens. When i first got the 6300 I was impressed by the images and video. and with this lens it is my favorite.
You have some good suggestions here cameras I have never used. Good luck.

I am wanting to get better at photography and am looking for opinions on a couple of equipment choices. I am interested in shooting landscapes, Milky Way/star photos, sunrise/sunset, travel and family photos. I like to make 16 x 20 prints of the really good ones. I may have the need for video capability on an upcoming hike along the Appalachian Trail. I currently use a smartphone (LG G3) and I think it takes surprisingly good pictures. I am told that I have a good sense of what is a good picture and I want to get better and see how much better the photos can look.

I am wanting a mirrorless system and am torn between the Sony a6300 or 6500 with a Vario-Tessar T*E 16-70 mm f/4 OSS and the Fujifilm xt2 with the 18-55 f/2.8-4 kit lens.

I am not made of money and want to try to stay below $2000 (I know that the 6500 would put me above that, I just don't know if the improvements are worth the money to me).

Please hit me with your opinions and advice, I enjoy reading and learning from the forum and am anxious to get started.

My wife's camera is a6000 coupled with Zeiss 16-70 F/4. The lens is sharp in the center but soft at the corners, where it also has significant chromatic aberrations. The later can be compensated in PP, but the only PP software I am aware of, that tries to tackle corner softness is Capture One. Luckily for you Sony owners can have the pro version of Capture One for just $50. With your taste for landscapes this lens may not be for you, so first try it and see if you will like it. There is a good review of this lens in Imaging-resource: https://www.imaging-resource.com/lenses/sony/e-16-70mm-f4-zeiss-vario-tessar-t-za-oss-sel1670z/review/. They mentioned there that the softness was not even at all 4 corners and depended on the FL. In my opinion this maybe was pointing to a decentered element. I didn't noticed anything like this in my wife's copy.

Thank you to all who commented on this topic. I made the decision to buy the Lumix G85. It just seemed to be the best value and I liked the way it felt. It is larger than the Sonys but not heavy at all. I used it on a trip where we saw Crater Lake, the Meteor Crater in AZ, the Petrified Forest and Carlsbad Caverns.
