Eight or nine years ago Stumpy came to the Bait shop looking for food. There was something unusual about him. He had a foot missing and walked with a stump at the end of his leg. No one knows just what happened but it's easy to guess. Close by the bait store is a canal that runs close by Lake Okeechobee that is infested with alligators and snakes. Let you imagine run a little and you will come up with probably what happened. I was introduced to Stumpy yesterday. I fed him a fresh minnow from the well and he was a happy Cow Bird. Down here we call them cow birds. They are really Egrets, or Cattle Egrets. The shop is Garrard's Bait and Tackle Shop at 4375 US 441 S in Okeechobee Florida.
It's wonderful that he still can get around.
Stumpy is a Snowy Egret. Cattle Egrets follow cows in the field eating insects the cows stir up. Hopefully Stumpy is finding enough food. He uses those big yellow feet in shallow water to stir up food.
