Hi! This is my first post here, I was looking through your threads and I was just wondering if anyone had any advice or help for getting a (very tight) battery compartment cover off! I've attached a picture, and as you can probably see, the edges of the slot have worn away and its practically impossible to undo it. I only got this camera today from a friend and it won't work unless I change the battery (it's an olympus om40)
Oh so very frustrating!
Any help would be much much much appreciated, as I would love to use it ASAP ahh

A Q-Tip and WD-40. You may have to clean up that groove or cut another to get a good grip. A Dremel comes to mind.

Just tried the Q-tip and Wd40, didnt do anything :( even took the bottom compartment off to get in there better and alas, no luck. I think a dremel is the next best option - I'll have to raid my dad's toolshed

Try using a coin which will fit in the slot and clamp the coin in a mole wrench, that such give you some extra leverage to undo the screw.

The slot on the battery cover is made to be removed with a coin. After a good soak with a light lube, clamp the proper fitting coin in a vice grip to apply more downward force, that should work. Good luck!

A small, sharp, chisel or prick-punch, if applied near the outer edge and tapped in a counter-clockwise direction will usually free up the cover.

The slot hasn’t worn away, some ham-handed ape has had ahold of it!! There is a chance that the battery has corroded, I like the idea of WD-40 and a nickel with vise grips. Let the WD-40 soak in awhile first. If the ape hasn’t damaged it too much, it should loosen.

A nickel won't work. Go to the hardware store with your camera and buy a 1", ¾" or whatever size file isn't too wide. I promise it will work.

From the looks of the slot, that's been tried already!

I doubt it. A file won't slip.

A square ended tool in a circular slot is a sure way to jemmy it up more. It may not matter now, though. It's already damaged to the point that I would never reuse it if it were mine.

In that case, he should buy two files and use one to make the end of the other one into a semicircle.

The old oil filter removal trick.

I’d worry that someone might think I was the ham-handed ape!

When you get the cover off be sure to remove all traces of the WD40. The residue could interfere with conductivity.
