Wake from the air with a Nikon point and shoot

Wow. Wake island is literally in the middle of nowhere and is a strategic US Air Force Base. How did you happen to be flying right over it? I would have thought that would be frowned upon unless you were there in some official capacity. You can plainly see the airstrip at the extreme right of the atoll as well as all the buildings. Nice shot. What was your altitude? Lot of history at Wake. The Japanese first attacked it on December 11, 1941, only 4 days after Pearl Harbor. I never realized the lagoon covered that much of the island's already small area.

Ah! So you are in the Air Force. That makes sense then why you would be there. Great shot from a point and shoot. Be safe out there!!
In the 60's they had good box lunches there.

Wake was an interesting place to visit in the 60's. I flew through there twice a month from 1966-1970. It was one of our regular layover stops for re-fueling and crew rest. There were lots of old rusted Japanese gun emplacements and bunkers with machine gun nests to explore. Fishing, snorkeling, and a cold brew at the Drifter's Reef was the highlight of the trip.

On my free flight to Korea, we landed in Hawaii to refuel. When the plane was gasssed we got back on board, but the plane would not get off the ground. We got to spend the night. The next morning we got on that same plane and safely got airborne. A few hours later the plane started going down. I looked out the window. Nothing but water in all directions. Wrong. We landed on that short airstrip in your picture. Thank you and the USAF for my safe trip and thank you for your service to our country.

I never made it to Wake (26 year blue suit career) - - but that might have been a GOOD thing ??
