Your camera battery has to be fully charged, that might be the reason.

Hi, I noticed that there was an update for my D5300 and decided to install.Twice I downloaded & tried to install but the camera does not recognize the file on the card. Did not want to proceed beyond that for fear that I might do more damage than good. Below are the steps I took:

Format card in camera
Downloaded file onto my Mac
Copied to card (yes to the root directory of the card)
Ejected card from Mac
Inserted card in camera & then turned on
Went to firmware version - did not get notification of update available

That's where I left it,as I said did go any further. Didn't want to take any chances of doing any harm.

Any suggestions, did I miss something/ do something wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated, unfortunately no camera stores in Pittsburgh so I am relying on the community.

Thanks for looking & taking your time

That's what happened 1st time. After talking w Nikon cyst support & recommendations here I did extract the .bin file & copied to root directory of card. After inserting card into camera & going to firmware it only shows original, nothing stating that update available or anything.

Is it possible that the firmware is already the latest version?

Unless I'm missing something, I hear you're putting card in camera and waiting for camera to begin firmware process. It's been a while since I've done a firmware update but don't you have to go into menu and instruct the camera to begin the update?

You've probably already tried this, but just in case, I had a problem for some unknown reason with my original SD card (that later worked).

If you have another SD card you can use, try the following.

1. Insert another card in you camera
2. Format it
3. Shut the camera off
4. Remove the card from the camera
5. Insert the card in the computer
6. Place the .BIN file in the root directory
7. Safely eject the card from the computer
8. Insert the card in the camera
9. Turn the camera on
10. Go to your Menu to FIRMWARE

See if the update option now shows

Thanks everyone for hints & guidance. I've been trying for a couple of years to update the firmware on my D7100. With this help I've finally succeeded. It's a shame the Nikon Support page isn't as clear!

You are almost right....I just updated my D3300 but they are almost the same except for file name extension.

I just updated my D3300 It is Easy, but you need to follow the directions to the tee. And You MUST use an approved card. Here is a link to the updates http://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/products/21/D3300.html There are two updates, one for the camera and the lens update to support the AF-P. You do not say what your operating system is. Here is the windows instructions.

1. Create a folder on the computer hard disk and name it as desired. (d3300 update)
1.a format the card in the camera.
2. Download F-D5300-V101W.dmg to the folder created in Step 1.
3. Run F-D5300-V101W.dmg to extract the following file to a folder named “D5300Update”:
• D5300_0101.bin (the camera firmware)
4. Using a card slot or card reader, copy “D5300_0101.bin” to a memory card that has been formatted in the camera.
5. Insert the memory card into the camera memory card slot and turn the camera on.
6. Select Firmware version in the SETUP MENU and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the firmware update.
7. Once the update is complete, turn the camera off and remove the memory card.
8. Confirm that the firmware has been updated to the new version.
9. Format the card in the camera again.

Finally there is success! Was on with Nikon Cust Svc for awhile tried 2 different cards & a lot of hmmms from him it finally worked. Walked through what I have been doing & he confirmed everything was correct. Did it with him twice & it finally worked. Glad that it took him so long too, I had followed the instructions to the letter. Thanks everyone for hanging in with me & I can safely say it wasn't me who couldn't follow directions. Again appreciate the help & input.

Did you have an approved card.... I assume you did if they stayed on the phone with you. Glad you finally got it done.
