This is an experiment on a number of fronts. First, I bought a 150-500 mm Sigma lens on UHH from MtnMan and wanted to try it out on my Nikon 800e. Second, I had read in BW Vision, a website belonging to Joel Tjintjelaar who works exclusively in B&W, that photographers should experiment with NOT using presets or SEP, but try using only Lightroom, which is what I did. I took the photo from a site about 30 yards away, up about 20 steps on a nub of land overlooking the bay; iso 400, 170mm, f/13 at 1/200 sec. I did about a 30% crop from the left, then did all the pp in Lightroom. I like the results and wanted to share. Matt

Very nice, Matt. Interesting contrast of textures. One of the workshops I attended, the instructor gave us the same advice. No presets, but process in Lightroom. I have had some success, still need practice. Right now it's color time in the Rocky Mountains.

Many thanks for the encouragement. I will want to see more of the Rockies in bloom.

I like it too, Matt. I like the rippled water in the upper part of the frame. I almost felt it moving. I like the texture of the rock and the grass and the reflection of both in the still water in the foreground. It is a simple composition with a lot to see on download!

That's a very good effort, Matt. My one criticism is the lack of detail in the whites, There is some in the grass, just. An almost total lack of detail in the white waves. This could be over-exposure or maybe over processing. If you started by shooting a RAW file this is probably curable. If you shot in jpg recovery is almost impossible. Great experiment and well worth posting.

I shot in raw so I'll go back and see what I can do. Thanks for calling my attention to this. Matt

Here's the original, sooc, and another with minimal processing. No blinkies or warnings in Lightroom about the whites at this point; I moved the sliders back when the dreaded triangles appeared. Thoughts? Thanks. Matt

Nothing like new lenses to get the creative juices going ...... I share that excitement everytime I get a new one to experiment with. These were good experiments, Matt. I agree with Shakey's comments ..... and your later images were more pleasing to my eyes than the earlier ones.

Matt, I really like this one. Good detail in the shadows, but just a bit too much white, as in lack of tonality, in the ripples. Personally, I'm not one for presets. Each image has its own personality and needs to be treated individually.

Hi Matt. I don't use Lightroom. I'm a GIMP and lately an Affinity fan. In Affinity I work in layers and use the following to get the effect I liked using your image: Levels; White Balance; HSL (Luminosity only); Black and White; Brightness and Contrast. All the work was done with sliders. Naturally all images are subjective. If I may have your permission I can post my interpretation of your experimental image. Blinkies are available in Affinity, I kept those out as you did.

Feel free. I will benefit from what you do. Thanks. Matt
