I'd like to take an online photography course...I don't need a degree or anything, just want to take my hobby up a notch (or several). I see the online courses like New York Institute of Photography, etc. and I'm wondering if this kind of thing is good? In addition I can watch the youtube videos from Steve Perry, Bryan Peterson, etc.. Just wondering what you all recommend...online course? Youtube? Both? Thanks for all your wise advice!

Thanks, tradio. I should have mentioned I did read most of the Bryan Peterson books and they are excellent. I am a visual person and thought maybe a class or youtube video would be helpful. You are correct that youtube is free and that is a good point. Thanks, again.

Check out classes from CreativeLive.com - general photography and camera-specific classes. Not expensive, good value. Classes are on sale often. /Ralph

I'm a big fan of Youtube. It's free and you can find just about any kind of instruction you might want.

I had a discount coupon for the iPhotography course (https://www.iphotographycourse.com/). It's U.K.-based, but the content is thorough and you can take the course at your own speed. It's broken into modules, with an "exam" after each. You are able to upload photos to the site and have them critiqued. Parts of it may be too fundamental for some, but since you can proceed at your own pace, you can get some good info.

You already mentioned Bryan Peterson, get yourself his book " Understanding Exposure" and get out there, putting everything you've read to use and practice and practice, creating your own photography course, It'll be just as good and will save you a bundle!!

Lots of extremely enjoyable instructional videos here - short, easy to comprehend, and "go at your own pace" - I made great strides forward when I first started to use them.

Oh, and they're free !

You might consider The Great Courses offerings. All are well done but I liked the two by National Geograpic photographer Joel Sartore best.

Their couses are always on sale so expect to pay no more than $79 each. You can get Fundamentals of Photography now for $59. Well worth it.

You can get DVDs but their streaming system is first rate.

Great Courses is having a huge sale right now -- up to 80% off. They have at least three different courses.

You tube. Practice Practice Practice.....
70/30 between shooting and learning post processing. Do them in parallel....watch how you grow :-)

Challenge yourself to always learn 1 thing new everyday you shoot. Look back 2yrs later and be amazed how much you cringe at what you used to think was really good. (There will be a few good ones too! :-)

Thank you to everyone who replied. You've all been a great help! Sometimes I get bogged down with wanting to read every book, watch every video, sign up for every class. And don't go out and actually shoot (I do, but not nearly enough). I may take one of the suggested courses/videos just because I need structure. Good advice to learn something new every day. I need to remind myself I don't need to know EVERYTHING before I go out and shoot! Just go do it! Thanks, again, to all. You've helped a lot!
