Here is my attempt to make some portrait shots of African animals. Enjoy.
Nice set. I particularly like the hippo and the kudu.

Thank you very much. I have been following your thread with interest and look forward to some more of your work--like that great elephant I remember centered perfectly walking in the bush. . . the hippo is probably my favorite of this group because it is a different perspective. All the best.

Thank you. Most were taken in Botswana--with the baboon in Zambia.

Yes, the hippo shot shows its bulk very well. We saw lots of hippos but I never really got a good angle. Most were submerged.

This is the only hippo that I saw that was not submerged. He was on land and promptly went into the water towards our boat, after bellowing at us. I attach the out of water shot.
My wife was always urging me to get a 'hippo yawn' shot but I was always doing something else when the opportunities arose! I did get her a leopard yawn though.

Well done images whwiden.
The hippo yawn I took was just lucky. The problem I found shooting safari photos is really twofold. Most shots I took were either pretty poor in one way or another, or at best ordinary. Even when a good shot, they end up looking like everyone else's safari shots. For printing, I want an excellent execution of what would otherwise be an ordinary shot. Your elephant shot fits in that category. At first blush, it is basic. However, it was very well done--perfect balance--making it a definite keeper in my book. It just had the right "look". Or, I want an unusual perspective, like my hippo in the water. These are subjects for a longer treatment in a separate post that I might write up when I reflect further on my trip.
