I am just curious and wonder why there are so many of the 24-70G ED and not the 24-70G ED VR model for sale on eBay. I am interested in acquiring one of the two. Please keep any idea or suggestions as simple as possible.
Thanks
Ray

My best guess is that, since the VR model is so new, the ones for sale are from the folks who updated. I'd consider selling my non VR. If you are interested, please PM me. Best of luck.

The 24-70 is a better lens but still not up the standards of the 28-70 or the first normal zoom, the 35-70. What you are seeing are those that believe the latest is the best and I just have to have it.

I agree, it's mainly a case of gotta have the latest so sell the older stuff on eBay and get the new.

I personally still use my old Canon EF 28-70 2.8L and just can't justify the cost of the newer 24-70 2.8L, not for 4 more millimeters. If I need something wider than 28mm I use my 16-35 2.8L.

I would, respectfully disagree. The 24-70/2.8G is the standard by which others are judged and one heck of a superior lens. I owned the 35-70 and found the 24-70 more to my personal liking. I believe that I did own the 28-70, but since I really don't remember it, I can't comment. Have not, yet, upgraded to the VR version of the 24-70/2.8, but it is a possibility as I do find myself using that lens in lower light situations more often, but I do actually prefer my faster, fixed focal length lenses in those situations. Best of luck.

I think a lot of people upgraded to the VR, so there is a glut on the market of used non-VR. I tested the VR version against my non-VR lenses (I had two at the time). The old lenses seem to always have noticeably better center sharpness, but also poorer edge and corners at wide apertures - at F5.6 and smaller, the two lenses performed similarly. Unless you absolutely cannot live without VR, save your pennies and get a nice deal on a used G-ED version. You won't notice the corners and edges unless you do architectural or interior photography.

The 24-70 has more range, so it's more versatile but it's optics are not as good. I have not only seen tests to show it but my brother in law teaches at a professional photo school in and he sees a lot of these lenses and exactly what they can do; he is comparing them all the time. We both have the 35-70 (he got one when I told him about it; in fact he is on his second one, that's how much he likes it) and he agrees hands down, as soon as they extended the zoom to 24mm, it lost a lot in quality. The 28-70 is considered the cream of the crop and I'm sure if it is because it goes to 28 instead of 35 or if it is actually optically superior. I know it is larger. Try to find one on the used market? The 35-70 sells still for more money today, than for what it sold for new.

Many thanks to all my UH members who have responded to my question. I have paid attention to all the ideas and suggestions offered; I would like to follow up with one more question in mind - the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 is less expensive but seems to have some good reviews on this site; how compatible (functionally wise) is it with a Nikon D610.
Thanks

It is my understanding that the old 24-70 f2.8 lens is or is being discontinued. I have used one and it is big, heavy and sharp. Best used with a tripod.
The VR version offers no problem hand held. I cannot comment on its image quality.
Expect full functionality with the Tamron, a cheaper but excellent lens and has VR.
