I would recommend at least a .45!

For someone who professes to know so much about firearms, that is a silly statement. For the "lady" in the top picture, a 25 mouse gun might suffice, for the one on the bottom, nothing less than a 50 cal BMG cartridge will do

An interesting comment - and a logical, if somewhat exaggerated one. However, it may interest you to know that the second largest Alaskan Brown Bear ever killed was killed almost instantly by one shot from a .22! Yes, several more shots from the .22 were fired as "insurance", but from all indications the first shot was the kill shot.

I know about that incident. That lady was one lucky Mama, as well as a great shot. But would you choose that weapon for bear protection? As a lifelong sailing enthusiast, I have read numerous accounts of transatlantic crossings in tiny sailboats. Doesn't mean that I would attempt it. BTW, the M1 Carbine which is 30 caliber, is banned in some states for deer hunting because it is felt by some that it is too small to guarantee a quick, humane kill.

If some 4F Jody doesn't know when and how to use one, they shouldn't be allowed to have one. Military loads were underpowered and FMJ military bullets have been banned in most states for deer. Some fine adjustments to the ramp will ensure reliable feeding of JHP bullets. Three round mags are available, as are plugs for milspec mags. Why would they allow bow hunting and ban the .30 Carbine? They don't ban .30-30's for black bear hunting, but I sure wouldn't use one; it would make some of the bigger ones a bit peevish.
