If you were buying a new camera, would the presence of a flip-out screen be a mandatory item? If so why, and would you also need it to tilt, and do a 180ยบ for selfies? Or would you be quite satisfied with a standard screen?
I've always just had a standard screen, and I've always coped. I'm wondering if a flip screen would get enough use to warrant having it. They have always seemed to me, to be a very fragile item, and not worth the bother. I'm curious about your ideas regarding the pros and cons.
Also while I've got your attention, what's your opinion regarding touch-screens? Do you love 'em? Hate 'em? Or do you get along just fine with standard switching? I have this feeling about getting my greasy fingerprints all over my beautiful HD screen.

Thanks..................Dave

One thing I like about the D750 is the movable (not flip-out) LCD. It lets me get high and low shots easily. I'd hesitate to buy a major camera that didn't have a movable LCD. Fragility, especially for the ones that flip out, is definitely a concern. I have no interest in touch screens.

It was a deal-maker on my D5100, (and why I prefer the whole D5xxx series to the D7xxx etc). I can get perfectly composed candids while the camera sits in my lap and I clandestinely look down at it, I can shoot with the camera high over my head in crowded situations, I can check my hair when no mirror is available, I can hold the camera at lily-pad level without lying down in the swamp. Ariculated screen is one of the first items I check for when considering a camera, built-flash is the second; neither of these? no sale!

If you have a fetish about photographing dog turds on the street, and do not want to bend over to frame, and focus, a tilt screen would be useful. I do not do such, either, however. I have no use for a tilt / flip / articulated screen, and would never buy a camera which had one just to get such a screen. I have gotten by nicely, so far, without such a screen. If I want to shoot a parade, or such, I will get there early enough to be in the front of the crowd, and so not need to shoot over anyone else's head. If I ever get a camera which has such a screen, it will be bought for it's: shutter speed, ISO, continuous video focusing, or some other such feature....not for it's screen.

They can be helpful in getting candid street shots. People think you're just fiddling with your camera because you're looking down instead of looking at them.

I didn't think I would use the flip screen much either when I first bought my D750 but I found that it is very useful and use it frequently for low or high angle shots in fact I find myself not using the body that doesn't have a flip screen for that reason and am thinking of replacing it with one that does. That is a feature I would want on any cameras I buy in the future.

My newest camera the Pentax K-70 has an articulating LCD and the main reason that I purchased it was for the ability to swivel the LCD for low shots and selfies.

I just used it not a minute ago. I would have hated taking this on my stomach. Shot with a SX50. Don't get me wrong, I prefer an EVF/OVF but there are times I appreciate it <TILT SCREEN>. ... .

Yes, I have cameras both ways. To me future cameras that I buy will with out question have articulating screen. I use to worry about connections not being robust... also popup fill flashes breaking off, but both worries have been proven wrong to me in the use of my cameras.

Summary: GO ARTICULATING SCREEN

Aging is a consideration but also consider the ground you need to lay on to get that low angle shot. If its mud or wet ground, you either need to be really committed to it or have a vari screen. Oddly, the only thing that would make me dump my 6D for the 6DmkII is the screen....but not at that price and it does not have dual slot....sorry Canon, no dual slot means no GAS for you.... The 5DmkIV with a vari screen would be the ultimate camera for me as it would be my 70D+6D combined with dual slot. (Ok, I might still buy the 6Dmkii when the price comes down as I could dump my 70D and 6D with only the loss of the reach of the 70D crop....and not dumping my Canon glass to go Sony just yet)

I will add one more benefit to the flip screen. To remove sun glare on the LCD when the sun is at your back or even over head. With a fixed screen you need to either cup your hand around the screen to see it or reposition your setup. With a flip screen no problem, just change the angle of the screen.

This topic reminds me of when automatic garage door openers became available. The "old-school" ney-sayers said "I don't need no stinking garage door opener, if I need the garage open I will get out of the car and open it!" Who doesn't have a garage door opener these days?

Unless you shoot in arctic or rain forest conditions on a regular basis, there is no reason not to have a flip screen. The vast majority of users are starting to realize this, I just wish the major camera manufacturers would pull their heads out of their proverbial you-know-whats and realize it! My two cents worth, keep the change!

There are times I wish I had a flip screen as my old bones don't work as well as they used to, but having a grounding in 35mm film, where all you had was the viewfinder, I get along without it. I don't see a real need for touch screen.

Sun glare!! That's a good point Lazy J, and would share equal billing with, "taking low shots without lying down in the mud."
And as far as, "Who doesn't have a garage door opener these days?"...............I don't even have no stinking garage!!

I agree. One can get along without a flip screen. I could too. You could have it but not use it, unless there was no other way to get the shot. Then it would be nice to have. I don't think that I would necessarily consider it to be a serious priority when making a camera purchase. But then again, that is the question isn't it?

To me a flip-out screen would not be mandatory when buying a new camera. One of my point & shoot cameras has a flip-out screen and do use it on occasion but it's not high on my priority list.

I have always desired a tilt screen and use it most of the time. I shoot a lot of video now using a Gorilla pod. The tilt is very handy to see what the image looks like. Especially for time lapse shots. Love my GH5.
