If you have the time and money arrange a guided trip (that is the only way you can do it) to Hunts Mesa on the south side of Monument Valley. You will have pictures that few people have looking nprth into Monument Valley.

Arrange a guided trip and you'll get to copy what everyone else who took that trip got!

A guided trip is the only way to get to the top of Hunts Mesa and it is a rugged Jeep trip that only a few guides will take.

IMO, a guided tour is the way to go because:
1. It will get to you to sites which are not available to self guided, and
2. perhaps more importantly, it will get you to these sites much earlier in the morning.

It's amazing how everyone's photos of the same place are so different.

Wapiti, gorgeous, love the perspective and the unique, ( to me) blues!

We were there last month and stayed at The View hotel and took a morning tour guide. We got lucky.....only 6 people. With the bench seats, 2 to a seat. We really enjoyed our tour. We plan to go back and do the 6-hour tour. 3-hour in the morning and 3-hour in the afternoon. The hotel was awesome! Very clean. Fresh. Can't beat the balcony view. This was our 3rd time back to Monument Valley. We did see some tours packed in like sardines.

Nice sunrise back-lit shot.....good that you took the pic when you did because that on piece is
going to fall down anytime now !

We were there in May, to avoid the photo tours we rented a Jeep and took our time through the valley. We had to rent the jeep as we were in an RV and RV's are not allowed in the Valley. If you have an SUV, skip the tours, they are crowded and not comfortable.

Regarding what gear to use. I used my 18-55 mm and a 12 mm lens, Tripod, shutter release and a polarizer and I was able to capture all the scenes I wanted. Suggest that before you head into the park, have lunch at the on-site restaurant you can get a great view of the Mittens.

In July of 2016 four of us took a day long private tour with Larson Homer, Navajo Spirit Tours.
Incredible. As a Navajo, Larson grew up in Monument Valley.
This is his home.
He had access to areas not available to the average individual
and to most other tour operators.
Larson is a photographer.
We continue to keep in contact.
For most of us this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Don't be cheap.
Don't think you can find and access all of the "neat"
places by yourself.

PM me if you have other questions.

We did the long tour in late June. Just be prepared for a LOT of dust! I had to send both of my camera's and lenses to a camera shop for extensive cleaning afterward.

Show up with a camera. Shoot early and late. Can't miss.
