I spent a week in the small town of Red River, NM, high in the Sangre de Cristo mountains that are part of the tail end of the Rockies. It's beautiful country and I spent every afternoon touring around. Had cloudy skies part of the time. Here are a few images of what it's like to be at 8350' and higher. Enjoy! Comments welcome.

Excellent series, beautiful scenery and I love the storm shot. I envy you being able to reach those heights, I suffer severe altitude sickness anywhere near 8,000'.
Nice series. It is a beautiful place.
These are all beautiful, Kathy. I think the second is my favorite. The fresh green is so inviting and the trail leads off to adventure. The sky is magnificent, too.

Thanks so much. Actually, I like wide open skies. But sometimes clouds are nice - until they dump on you!

Thanks, Sylvia. I've only had altitude sickness once, and I was so sick I truly wanted to die! I was in Cusco, preparing to go to Machu Picchu the following day. Luckily one of my friends had some pills. They pumped me full of medicine and coco tea and I made it. I get a slight headache my first morning in Quito, but coffee and breakfast and it's gone. My only reaction to my week in Red River was getting out of breath when going upstairs.
I feel for you. So much of the beauty of the world is way up high!

Thanks! It was beautiful on top of that mountain. The chair lift ride up and down was a white-knuckle experience, but I loved being on top!

That is where I found I had a problem too, horrendous nose bleeds and serious headache getting off the plane, I was stuck in the hotel for two days. Then travelled to Macau Picchu and was taken off the boat on a stretcher while on the floating island. Taken to the hospital given oxygen and copious amounts of coco tea (cocaine leaves) in hot water. I was told never to put myself in altitude situations again. My head felt like it was in a vice! They wanted to fly me home but I managed to get around for the next few days with a small oxygen cylinder and flasks of coco tea. I suffered from withdrawal symptoms for about two months from the cocaine.

WOW! That was bad. The second time I went there, I was on some pills that a doctor friend of mine recommended. They worked. I'd get a morning headache, but that was about all. My friend and I did notice some skin reactions (tingling, etc.), but everything was do-able. Obviously, you had a much stronger reaction. Yeah, you probably better stay off the mountain.
