Good, if you want a very long reach. For the price, you can't go wrong.

I have the P100 and P600 and love them, so if the P900 functions as good as these two, I'm in. Although the 900 is quite a bit heavier!

If you are doing a lot of outdoor, nature, wildlife, etc. shooting it is one fine camera. I enjoy mine. Is it everything in a camera? No! But then, what camera is. Pull the trigger, gary. I think you will have fun with your choice.

I have owned a P900 for about one year. My legs are not what they used to be and I got it prior to a trip to Barcelona that was followed by a boat ride (Oceania) to NYC. I will be taking it again for a river boat trip (Viking) this fall. I think it is terrific for my purpose which is to get pix for photo books documenting travel and a few larger prints. At 16mps you can pretty much enlarge at will unless you're covering entire walls. The always-shoot-raw crowd will not recommend the P900 but, then again, they won't be shooting from a boat at 1000+ mm either. The camera does have gps which is a nice extra (saves taking notes). On an old Route 66 road trip earlier this year, I had the P900 but also a D300 and D5200 (wife's). I used the P900 a fair amount to avoid walking although the 18-200 on the other bodies would probably have been fine. There are issues about steadying the camera at extreme focal lengths but I could usually find something to brace against on the boat. A monopod would be a nice accessory that I may include on our trip this fall. Battery life is not great because, I think, the lens motor sucks up power so carry a couple of extras. I have a collapsible rubber-like lens shade that works well. The controls are pretty much unique to the camera and the video button is in a bad location unless you like random video bits here and there. Hope this is useful info.

How much you will like it or not depends on what you have been using until now. If you are comparing to other point and shoot cameras with small sensors or mobile phones then it is a great camera. If you are comparing with full frame Dslr or mirrorless cameras you will not be very happy about the image quality in comparison. It is very useful as a travel camera and for almost anything you want a picture of to view on your PC or TV. Video is ok but I do not at all like the sound recording with the video. My mobile does that a lot better.
Either way it is a great value for money and you can get a lot of beautiful pictures with it. I have one that I sometimes use and I am generally happy about it.

I have one & love it. The 2,000mm zoom is very usable & is quite sharp as long as you can keep it steady (tripod or monopod is best for long shots--I have posted many shots at 2,000mm). It takes great videos, too.

When you need the extra reach it's unique and for birds it's really special. But here is a comparison screen shot from ImagingResource, my RX10m3 at 12,800 vs my wife's P900 at 6400 (limit).

When we are driving through nature reserves (walking is not feasible for us) the P900 sometimes gets very nice shots that are simply out of reach for my camera. Both cameras offer a well thought out set of compromises, weigh about the same, etc. I'm glad we have both. Different design decisions produce different results.

The Sony is on the left but that may be obvious. Neither is very good and that's not the point. The point is to compare the limits. The ComparoMeter is available to all but I'm leaving off the link so the Admin doesn't move this.

And, of course, there is the RAW factor.

I bought the P900; used it for a week and returned it. Nikon skimped to keep the price down. If you need a 2000mm to photograph a bird, the chances are you would not have seen the bird in the first place. I bought the Sony RX10iii, the quality of the camera and the photographic results are better than the P900. The zoom goes to 600mm and the price is higher and worth it. PS all of my other equipment is Nikon; the P900 was a disappointment. I will be going on a trip in about three weeks and I want to travel as light as possible. I will be taking the Sony instead of one of my big heavy telephotos ( I own both the Nikon 300 & 500mm prime and the 200-400 zoom). Yes, they will take higher quality images but the Sony will come close enough (in my opinion) and will be far easier to transport. I posted this situation recently ... http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-469250-1.html

I alsp tried the P900 with poor long range results. I have since stuck with the D500 and an Oly OMD.
