Hey everyone,

I have been looking to get a upgrade from my bridge camera to an ILC, and I have finally settled on the Panasonic G85. Now I'm just trying figure out if I should buy directly from the Panasonic store, if I should buy from a online camera store like Adorama, or if I should get it from a local camera retail store. It would be great if you guys could let me know on differences in price, warranty, and customer service and just your overall experience with all of these different stores.

Thanks,
Will

Wilbenz, I buy from my local camera stores. Since the camera manufacturers dictate the selling price, your cost will be close. The differences could be accessories included will be different. Most are economical items not worth as much as they claim. The other difference might be sales tax. For me, the customer service more than compensates for the tax. Also, I like to have the merchandise in my hand, to see how it feels.

Will, my first choice for purchasing cameras, lenses, accessories, etc. is my local camera store. I want to contribute to keeping them in business. The few extra dollars that may cost will be to my benefit as they are going to be there to personally answer questions, etc. Should they not have what I'm looking to purchase, my next stop is B and H.

The only time I buy online is if my local (the only real camera store in the state) doesn't have what I'm looking for. The prices are the same and I like to walk out with my item in hand, also it's nice to handle and inspect it before purchase. We don't have sales tax here. Support the local economy.

The only camera store in my area(Northern New York State- area next to Canada) is Walmark, if you want to call it camera store.

It is really easy to price the camera you want from the different stores. If the prices are not greatly different I would probably go with the local store; you might have to pay taxes but you will not have to pay for shipping.

A lot of the small camera stores that used to be so common and convenient are now hard to find. If you are lucky enough to live where there is one, it is worth supporting when you can.

When you camera store closes because of a lack of business, don't come on this website and whine and wonder why they closed. You go to them for free information. Check prices and information with them your self.

If you have a good camera store nearby -as you have heard here - support them! They can be a great resource to you. Ours closed last year, and I miss the classes and the ability to actually go in and hold/look at a new lens, camera, camera bag, etc. But in our area retail space can cost upwards of $7,000 per month, plus labor costs, etc., so a "brick-and-mortar" store has to sell a lot of cameras to make it a profitable venture.

Searching online, it looks like the prices are the same, which is typical, since manufacturers control pricing at their approved dealers. Flip a coin or look for used or refurbished. If you see a new one advertised for a very low price, it's probably gray market - no U. S warranty.

My local camera store has been in business for decades. When I bought a D90 from them years ago, they charged $100 over list. After I bought my D7000 online, I went to them to see their prices - $100 over list. When people say, "Support your local camera store," that's like saying, "Send them a check for $50 every month."

I bought stuff from them even though they are rude to me. They still closed. Never buy anything online if I can buy it local. I am willing to drive 100 miles to a store.
