True. You really have to be a classic aficionado, and I am not. I can handle a little but not too much!

Thanks Brian. I just saw Sergei Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No.2 in C minor performed at NJPAC. For me, it is the most melodic of all of his compositions. I can listen to it all day & all night long. Not only Journey's "All by Myself" but "Full Moon & Empty Arms" is also derived from this fantastic piano concerto.

Good list. Thanks for posting. Familiar with everything on it except 'Islamey'. Is playing now. A few years ago saw there was a Bolshoi performance of Spartacus at the Kennedy Center in D.C. Purchased one of the last three tickets. I'm not particularly interested in ballet but was blown away by the performance. A superb meld of music, dance, and story.

Good list - I've bookmarked it to put on the big screen with Apple TV. Like all such lists, one can nit pick the choices. I prefer the original piano version of Pictures (e.g., Horowitz) and how about Rach 4 or Stravinsky's Firebird, etc. etc. The problem is that there is so much great Russian music. It's like a list of great Italian operas - what do you leave out.

Tchaikovsky's "Sérénade mélancolique, Op.26 " would have made my list.

First time I've heard César Cui's Orientale. Remarkably similar to the theme in Tchaikovsky's March Slav. The list is good listening all around and I can never get enough of Scheherazade! I would have included Russian Easter Overture.
