We were sitting in the blind when Hector spotted a road runner up high in one of the trees and said it had a lizard in its mouth. Well, that got everyone excited!
Hector stared trying to call him down to the ground. He wouldn’t come down. I decided to get a shot in case he leaves and does not come back (Image #1). After a bit, he flew off.
Later, Hector heard him behind the blind and started calling. He came in and landed on the stump (Image #2). Then, climbed up high in the tree.
Road runners make a “cooing” sound. I didn’t know they did that. The coo sounded like a dove cooing. When he coos he will lower his head to coo (Image #3). Still would not come down to the ground. Well, he flew off again.
About a little over an hour from the first spotting, Hector called a few times. The road runner flew in and landed next to the pond. All cameras started firing!
He paraded around with the lizard and walked off. But not, before we got our shots!! We didn’t see him again.
Hector, said the male will capture food and then look for a female to present the food to. A mating ritual. I have seen images in the past of road runners with food in their mouths. Wondered why they didn’t just eat the food…. Now, I know why.
Great pics & story !!! Thank you for sharing. Shang

Wow - fantastic captures! Or should we say "Bleep bleep"!
Good stuff, Pat. Before we made that trip, I was concerned that you might not enjoy the experience. No need to have been concerned. You did great and we all had a wonderful time at the Santa Clara.
Jay, is that that pesky little lizard from those Geico commercials? I sure hope so!
Great set.
Very interesting story and great photos. Thanks for sharing!
