Jake is a customer of mine and brought his D810 to me for repair estimate. I shipped it to Nikon for him and it came back "irrepairable". The front mount was ripped from the frame, the mirror box was damaged, and the prism was dislodged. This was no small fall, it looked seriously like intentional damage.
Best part is he has cell phone video of the baggage handlers "throwing" his bag on the ground from the plane. Delta is unsympathetic so far.

Unbelievable! That's another reason why I recommend that non-pros travel light.
Do not fly with a long lens attached to a camera body.
Good to see in his recently added update says Delta has agreed to fully pay for replacement/repair!
Thanks for sharing Jerry. That was quite a well worth read.

Agreed. My camera bag has compartments for my DX camera and 3 lenses. And other small pockets for miscellaneous small accessories. I've heard stories of fallen tripods with camera and lens attached, nose diving, and the lens mount is jammed and stuck in the camera body, as a result. I'm glad the OP had a happy ending to his damaged camera gear. That was quite a story regarding Delta Airlines. I would never travel on any airline with my lens attached to my camera inside a bag. Whether it is on my lap, or in the baggage belly of the plane.
For years, common wisdom has held that DELTA actually stands for "Don't Expect Luggage To Arrive."
