Today I got my Tamron AFF017N700 SP 90mm F/2.8 Di VC USD 1:1 Macro for Nikon. Walked out into my wife's flower garden and took these first ever macro photos. Hand held because I was eager to just snap some pictures.

You are started, now practice, practice, read and evaluate then practice some more. When you know each bug in the garden by his/her first name you are probably doing a little too much practice, or not.
I meant to include this photo.
Pelopidas Butterfly?
Looks like you are off to a good start. Looks like a Skipper to me.
I just googled the discription and chose the closest likely match. I really have no idea. Thanks.
Good start, next time you might want to check the 'store original' box so we can get a better look.
You are off to a great start. May I suggest you use a flash and a FotoDiox 6X8 diffuser on the flash for better and more diffused light. A good start for settings is 200 ISO, f16 at 1/250 speed. A better suggestion is to check out the UHH macro website for photos of what others use for success. We have some incredible macro shooters here and everyone I know is helpful to others.

Thanks Dennis2146. I just bought the Sigma 140 ring flash but I haven't found any diffusers for it. Rwilson1942 I will try to remember to check "store original". How does it work?

When you post a photo there is a box, Store Original, that you check.
It also helps a lot if when you answer another post you click on, Quote Reply. That way we all know who you are answering.
I am not sure about diffusing a ring flash but I know some members use a ring flash. If you check the macro forum there are lots of photos of outfits members use along with tons of information.
Good luck and submit photos.
