Vietnam

I dug this photo out of my collection of VN photos for a friend of mine. It was taken just a little West of Quang Ngai in 1965. We called it VC valley. How would you like to get shot down or have mechanical problems over this area? You would probably never crash on the ground more likely you would get hung up in the canopy of the trees. If you did make it safely to the ground probably the only way out would be to walk. We avoided flying over this area like the plague. No telling what enemy activities could have been housed under that canopy. If the enemy was there and I suspect they were, detection would have been almost impossible so I think the area was treated as just a place on the map. With today’s infrared technology maybe it could detect something in that jungle. Beautiful part of VN but a very dangerous part.

There is beauty everywhere even in that place and in that time. Thanks for being there for us. I received my Honorable Discharge in '62 and missed that one.

I always thought VN was a beautiful country and I liked the people. Wish I was able to go back and see it today. Guess it's quite amazing from 1965. Thanks for your service.

A place that very few remember. I like the shot, has a bit of a mysterious look. The number of people that remember that effort goes down every day. What a disaster. As I remember everyone wanted to know the Body Count. Johnson and White House strategists. Life in this country changed after that war. I remember being in an area near Saigon where there were lots of houses on stilts. I took some photos there, late 1965. This is from an old slide using a Nikon F Photomic T.

It is a beautiful country. I worked in the highlands for two years as a tank crewman. The variety of the terrain is amazing. And always fascinating. Then there were the sunsets at the end of the summer rainy season, some of the best anywhere on earth. It could be a tough life, but in the end I was glad I went.

That's a beautiful photo, Huey Driver, and good description of what you were going through over there!
