Nikon D810 plus 24-120 VR together weigh around 1700 grams, or around 3.75 pounds. I can't handle that much weight on my neck for very long. It's a lot easier on the shoulder, but it's still a big chunk of camera to carry around for a whole day in a city.

I have a D800, but my D7000 is much lighter. You might try a D7100 or 7200 as your walk around camera to lighten the load.

I'm afraid I don't agree with you...but then I'm not a professional photographer...just professional at the kind of photography I do. The majority of what I do is fires and wrecks and such and I provide wreck work-ups to the NCSHP and have been doing so for roughly thirty years. My personal photography is usually sunsets, landscapes, animals, etc. My wife and I just returned from three weeks out West and we shot a mama grizzly and her cubs, numerous bison, pronghorns, longhorn sheep, and anything else that would stand still long enough to stop the truck and grab the camera. We shot snow on the hood of my truck on June tenth...and a group of motorcycles patiently waiting for a herd of bison to take their time crossing a Black Hills road. I use a Sony 77ii with an 18-250 lens and the shots are usually sharp at all ranges. I don't see any need for having a truck full of lenses since I rarely have the time to change the lens anyway!

My D7000 and 28-300mm were a great combo in that way. With the Tamron 10-24mm as a wide angle lens it was all the camera equipment I really needed.
