Stick with the name brands. SD cards are cheap. Even the fast ones, compared to the big ones I have to use in my Canon XTi and 7D. Buy several 4, 8, or 16GB cards and don't put all your eggs in one basket. Have fun.

It depends what you consider general photography. Most professional photographers like a fast read/write SD cards made by SanDisk or Lexar. You can get by with any Class 10 type SD card by SanDisk or Lexar for just general photography.

I think that SanDisk and Lexar are considered to be the best. I have Lexar SD and XQD format memory cards. I also have two Lexar card readers - the Professional USB 3.0 dual slot reader and Professional Workflow XR2 USB 3.0 XQD reader

I like Sandisk and have nine.
I get the fastest I can (class 10), but some of my older ones are slower.

I use mostly Lexar Professional cards, SD, CF and XQD. I also have several SanDisk Ultra cards and a few Kingston and Transcend SD cards. The cards range in speed from 600X to 2933X. If your camera has dual slots, make sure you use cards of the same or similar speed, preferably the fastest you can afford.

The main issue is legitimacy, rather than counterfeit. Buy a name brand, and you'll be okay. Then you have to decide what type to get - lots of choices. Lots of links below.

What camera are you using. Nikon has "recommended" brands and models of SD cards for each of their models listed in the camera manual. Typically, they've tested Lexar, Sandisk, Panasonic, and Toshiba. Within those brands, they have specific models of cards that have been tested with each of their cameras. Personally, for my D7100 and D610, I stick with Sandisk and Lexar. I have 4mb, 8mm, 16mb, cards (my older cards that primarily get used for transferring images or to "scratch" cards and my current main cards that are 32mm and 64mb. And I use the maximum number of cards in each camera with the second card set as overflow to the first. This gives me the ability to have in excess of 1500-2000 shots available to me on a shoot without having to worry about reloading cards. (I carry a minimum of 3 batteries for each camera. The wife's Nikon D70s only uses compact flash cards and a maximum of 4gb so she also carries 4 cards and 3 batteries. NOTE: We carry a cigarette lighter (currently called an accessory outlet in new cars) convertor that allows us to plug in a 110v camera battery charger to the cars system for recharging batteries. This isn't a perfect solution but if we are traveling, it gives us the ability to recharge camera batteries while driving. Ours has 2 outlets on it so we plug both the D70s charger and my D7100/D610 which use the same batteries) into it. This gives us the ability to constantly recharge batteries. It also means that we have the chargers with us at hotels and motels (sometimes even restaurants) while on the road.

Have you checked your camera's manual to see what the manufacturer recommends?
If by any chance you no longer have manual, it can likely be downloaded for free from the internet.
