Rain Forest Tapestry

Rain Forest Tapestry

The temperate rain forest valleys of the western Olympic peninsula contain intricate understories. The association between Big Leaf Maple (Acer macrophyllum) and Vine Maple (Acer circunatum) creates complex structures that support many tons of associative species in just a very small area.

This image is typical of the interrelationship between species, and an example of the beauty of the terrain in the riparian Quinault rain forest valley.

This is a river bottomland, and it has been about 200 years since the main river flowed here. The river is now about 1/4 mile to the north, but will eventually flow here again.

It would be interesting to have a 10,000 year time-lapse, showing the birth, washing away, and rebirth of these tapestries of green.

The tree leaning out to the left is Bigleaf Maple, and the rest of the twisting and re-rooting structure is Vine Maple. Notice all the little Vine Maple shoots climbing one of the re-rooted foreground branches.

This was a very quiet spot, with only the sound of a small stream splashing off to the right of the camera, and Winter Wrens composing their intricate, long trills.:-)

Wonderful shot 68 although I think your words are worth a thousand pictures.

Your apt title, eloquent story and your image are food for the soul. Eloquent, achingly beautiful, Larry.

I remember how clever I thought "wet" side and "dry" side were when I first heard them used to describe this side and that side of the mountains. But your image of an area I've yet to visit points out there is wet and then there is wet!

Ah, yes, I remember it well. I only spent a few days there, but I will always remember the "feel" of the forest. This is awesome. Your photo has great lines.
