First time post: I shoot Nikon D7100 with longest lens a Tamron 16-300. I have used a Panasonic zs40 as a travel camera, mostly for the zoom. It has been damaged and needs replacement. Taking an Alaska cruise in July and thinking a 'bridge' type rather than 'point and shoot' would suit me better. Considering either Panasonic FZ1000 as familiar with the buttons, or Sony rx10. Any thoughts as to which may serve better? I like to shoot flora and fauna, landscape, street photograhpy, etc. NO birds. No patience and not enough glass. I am returning the Panasonic zs70. Disappointed in focus and to small for me to now hold steady. No tripod going with me.

Your opinions and recommendations appreciated. Right now leaning toward the FZ1000.

Tallyann, I have both. First bought the Fz1000 for hiking and I really like the camera. I will always keep it and frequently use it. I purchased the Sony Cybershot rx 10 111 in order to again use for hiking and to get a longer lens range plus higher Aperature than the Fz. I am 74 and needed to get rid of all the weight I was carrying on the hikes. With my 3rd. camera, Canon 70d, I use my 100mm macro and my lensbaby velvet. Think I am set now. Both of the cameras you are considering each have their own positives. The fz, I believe is better in low light. Google and read all the great info and view the tutorials. There are of course "better" cameras. I was commenting yesterday that my Canon 70d just felt nice to use. You can tell a difference. But just so heavy with the add on lens. Hope this helps. Sandy As far as "no tripod", you should have no trouble with either though I find the fz a bit better without tripod.

The FZ1000 has a lot of happy owners, but I don't have one. Did you look at a ZS100? Or, the FZ2500?

I confess to being a Panasonic addict. Somehow, between my wife and I, we've had several and like them. Capabilities of our Panasonic LF1, ZS100, LX100, GX7 and GX8 have varied but the menus are consistent. I've also got an aging Panasonic camcorder I still enjoy a lot!

Thanks, CSand. I'm 65 so can relate about carrying weight. The rx 10 111 is beyond my price range. $800.00 is my absolute limit. I'll keep reading.
I have s little time left before I go on our cruise!

Thanks you bspraque. It seems like I have looked at every Panasonic there is! With old hands, I find the zs 100 a bit too small to hang onto. Like the grip on the fz1000 and the 2500 is over my budget. I am almost sure I'll get the fz1000 at this point.

The FZ1000 would be a fun camera to own. Buy it from someone like B&H. I once bought a camera from them and told them I was going on a cruise. The return date was past the 30 day guarantee. They extended it until I returned. I loved the camera and kept it. Also, if you buy on a Visa or MasterCard, the credit card companies have a double your warranty policy. Right now, there are Panasonic specials with a 3 year warranty.

I just purchased a RX 10 III Sony from B & H is was used but in new condition in the box with everything got a good price on it. I am still playing with it as the menu is very different than the Nikon that I am used to. However different is saying it lightly a total new learning curve. But the camera shoots in RAW and has 20 mp with a f1.8 Ziess lens and fits in my pocket...So far the phtos I have taken with it are very good.

A couple of shots taken with the Sony RX10 III at my grandchildren's graduation party. Sorry about the small size as these were in my phone and I do not have the originals here at work. But you can get an idea of the quality of the camera's images. Taken at ASA 400 to freeze the motion of the kids on the trampoline. Like I said just learning to use the new camera.

Do some comparisons.

Read comparisons and specs, and decide what features are important to you.

I have the Lumix FZ1000 and it is a great camera. I bought it because of the 4K video and it's frame grab capability, but with the 1 inch sensor, it also takes some great photos. It's lightweight but large enough and has a good grip to hold steady.

Thank you Jerry. You always provide good research areas to go too! I've compared and narrowed it to the two I mentioned. I get so overwhelmed trying to decide!

Thanks you. Nice images but the III is over my budget.

Thank you all for your thoughts and suggestions. I'm ordering the FZ1000 today from Adorama.

Blue_Ultra ... I think you are confusing the Sony RX 10 with the Sony RX100. There's no way you can fit the RX 10 in your pocket !
